Kopanica can be explored from two perspectives: through its preserved historic town layout and through routes for activities on the water and by bike. Two market squares and churches provide historical reference points; a kayak route and regional cycling routes offer further perspectives. If you are planning a hotel stay in Kopanica, these distinctions can help you decide what to focus on during your trip. Depending on whether you are interested in architectural history, parish history or a particular way of getting around, different aspects of the area may be relevant to you.

Two market squares and different layers of history

Remnants of a historic town layout with two market squares have been preserved in Kopanica. The New Market (Nowe Miasto) was laid out in 1641 by Lampart Sierakowski. The compact brick buildings around the Old Market (Stary Rynek) date approximately to the mid-19th century. Thus, two different types of historical dating sit side by side: 1641 refers to the establishment of the New Market, while the approximate date for the Old Market describes its buildings. The two squares are therefore not simply two versions of the same historical reference. Together, they provide concrete points of reference in the preserved town layout. When comparing them, it is worth distinguishing the origins of the New Market from the architectural character of the Old Market.

Churches with their own historical dates

The churches, too, cannot be placed in history using a single date. The former Protestant church in Kopanica is Neo-Romanesque and dates from 1858–1859. The parish of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was founded in 1408; the parish church is listed in the register and inventory of historic monuments. The year 1408 therefore belongs to the history of the parish, while 1858–1859 dates the former Protestant church. The founding of a parish, a building’s construction period and its listing as a historic monument answer different historical questions. The style designation “Neo-Romanesque” also adds an architectural classification to the dates.

The Obra between water and cycling routes

At the road bridge, the North Canal of the Obra nominally ends; the Obra River begins there. This transition point provides a geographical reference, while the “Szlak kajakowy – rzeka Obra” offers the perspective of a longer route: it covers a 112.5-kilometre stretch accessible to kayaks, from Kopanica to Skwierzyna. Kopanica is one endpoint of this stretch. As an alternative, the 20-kilometre “Miejsca pamięci” cycling route passes through Żodyń, Kopanica and Wielka Wieś. In the order given, Kopanica lies between Żodyń and Wielka Wieś. Part of the Szlak Koźlarski also runs through Kopanica. The distances of 112.5 and 20 kilometres refer to different routes and means of travel, not to comparable stages. When making your choice, you can therefore first consider whether a water route by kayak or a regional cycling route better suits the focus of your stay.
