Lakes, a signposted hiking trail and impressive churches shape the experience of travelling in Wollstein. The 37-kilometre Konwaliowy Kayak Route forms a circular route across lakes in Przemęt Landscape Park; it starts and ends in Wieleń. You can travel the route in either direction. In Wieleń, you can rent kayaks and get information about organising your trip. As water conditions can affect whether the route is navigable, take them into account when planning.

Landscape, Water and Trails

Wolsztyn County lies in the area shaped by the most recent glaciation, the Vistula or Baltic glaciation, which ended around 15,000 years ago. It left behind a varied and undulating landscape. Established in 1991 to protect the postglacial landscape and local nature, Przemęt Landscape Park covers 21,450 hectares in the municipalities of Przemęt, Włoszakowice, Wijewo and Wschowa. Forty-two percent of its area lies in Wolsztyn County. For detailed route planning, it is worth checking the protected area's boundaries again.

Those travelling on foot will find a trail in Olejnica that begins and ends at a car park. Arrows mark the route between stops; an information board with general details and a route map stand at the trailhead. Another landmark is the wooden observation tower near Siekowo and Kluczewo. It is 30 metres high and stands in the forest on Winnica hill, at an elevation of 101 metres. There are 147 steps to the tower.

Cistercian History and Churches

In Kaszczor, the late Baroque Church of St. Adalbert tells the story of several building phases: the Cistercian order built it between 1764 and 1777, replacing a wooden church dating from the late 16th century. Its furnishings combine Baroque and Neoclassical elements from the second half of the 18th century. Kaszczor is also home to a former Protestant church, restored in 2011 and now used as a gallery and concert hall. From its rebuilt tower, the view stretches across Kaszczor and the surrounding area.

The late Baroque Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wieleń was built between 1731 and 1742 by the Cistercians of Przemęt. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. The high altar contains the Gothic sculpture of Our Lady with Child, Ucieczka Grzeszników (Refuge of Sinners), from the second half of the 15th century; it is the destination of many pilgrimages. In Przemęt, another building history can be traced: the Baroque Church of St. John the Baptist was built between 1651 and 1690, partly destroyed by fire in 1742, and rebuilt in 1758–1759. Its high altar dates from 1755. Fragments of former 17th-century monastery buildings survive south of the church; they were altered around 1767 and in the 19th century.

These places are also part of a wider context: the Greater Poland Loop of the Cistercian Route includes the former monasteries in Paradyż, Zemsko-Bledzewo, Łekno-Wągrowiec, Ląd, Wieleń-Przemęt and Obra, as well as the convents in Owińska and Ołobok. The history of the construction and furnishings of the churches in Kaszczor, Wieleń and Przemęt offers concrete examples from the route's surroundings.

Museums, Art and Architecture

The Robert Koch Museum occupies two rooms on the ground floor of a building constructed between 1842 and 1846. The memorabilia relate to Koch's time as district physician in Wolsztyn from 1872 to 1880, as well as to other places where he lived and conducted research. The display may change; if the museum is important to your plans, check in advance what is currently on view.

The Marcin Rożek Museum is housed in a villa at ul. 5 Stycznia 34. It was built to the artist's specifications, and he lived there from 1934. The museum includes a garden that stretches down to the lake and displays many of the artist's works. On the western shore of Lake Wolsztyn, the Open-Air Museum of Folk Architecture of Western Greater Poland also recreates the layout and buildings of a linear village across 3.5 hectares.

In Wroniawy, the palace brings together architecture and parkland: it was built for Stanisław Plater in the 19th century and remodelled in the Neo-Baroque style at the beginning of the 20th century. It is surrounded by a 12-hectare landscape park. The historic buildings therefore differ not only in function, but also in their dates and styles.

Getting Around and Regional Experiences

An important road connecting Poznań with Zielona Góra runs through Wolsztyn. Passenger trains run from Wolsztyn to Poznań, Leszno and Zbąszyń. As train services may change, check current timetables and connections before travelling.
