When planning a trip to Węgorzewo, you can explore cycling and cultural history as separate interests. Two cycling routes pass through the village; the manor house and park offer a distinct historical focus. Route type and destination are useful ways to distinguish between the tours: the green cycling route is a circular route, while R-8 runs via Skrzetuszewo to Brama III Tysiąclecia on Lake Lednica.

Cycling Routes: Circular Route or Connecting Route

The green cycling route is a 30 km circular route that passes through Węgorzewo between Brudzewko and Turostowo. It is also the longest route designated as part of the “Historia i przyroda to atuty Kiszkowa” project. The 29.7 km R-8 also passes through Węgorzewo. It is one of twelve designated connecting routes around Puszcza Zielonka and runs from there via Skrzetuszewo to Brama III Tysiąclecia on Lake Lednica. At 30 km and 29.7 km respectively, the two routes are almost the same length; the difference is 300 m.

The description of the green cycling route also offers practical guidance: it leaves Węgorzewo heading west, follows the Kiszkowo–Pobiedziska district road and turns onto a field track towards Turostowo after about 200 m. In the village centre, the red and green cycling routes intersect at a central road junction near the figure of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The red cycling route heads towards Brudzewko. It reaches the provincial road.

The Manor House and Park of Węgorzewo

The manor house is a brick building in the late Neoclassical style, dating from the first half of the 19th century. It is protected as a listed monument and included in the register of monuments. The manor house retains an original wooden ceiling cornice and an exposed wall that reveals the building’s construction.

The manor house park also dates from the first half of the 19th century and is classified as a landscape park. It, too, is protected as a listed monument and included in the register of monuments. Both date from the first half of the 19th century, but they are classified differently: the manor house is late Neoclassical, while the park is classified as a landscape park.

The park’s natural monuments include the pedunculate oaks “Adam” and “Wojciech.” Their trunk circumferences are 350 cm and 440 cm respectively; there is also a large old lime tree there. The trunk circumference of the pedunculate oak “Wojciech” is 440 cm, 90 cm greater than that of “Adam,” at 350 cm.

This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip, depending on your interests: the green route offers a circular route, while R-8 provides a connection to a named destination on Lake Lednica. Those with a stronger interest in architectural history will find points of interest in the late Neoclassical manor house and its surviving architectural features; the park complements them with its classification and named natural monuments.
