A trip to Gniezno offers specific cultural points of interest: the Church of St. John the Baptist, the cathedral and the Royal Route. They offer different perspectives—architectural history and surviving paintings, the history of Poland’s coronations, and aspects of the city’s history. Before choosing a hotel, you can consider whether you are particularly interested in religious architecture, historical stories or additional themes in the wider destination of Gniezno.

Church and Cathedral: Two Historical Highlights

The single-nave Church of St. John the Baptist in Gniezno was built in the mid-14th century, at the same time as the Gothic cathedral. Original polychrome decoration from the time of construction has been preserved in the chancel, executed using the al secco technique. The church’s design, date of construction and paintings give it a distinctive architectural history.

The cathedral on Lech Hill was the coronation site of the first five kings of Poland. This gives it a different historical emphasis from the church: here, the focus is on Poland’s early royal history, while at St. John’s, the 14th-century church building and its surviving wall paintings draw the eye. If you are deciding which cultural themes to focus on during your stay, these differences can help guide your plans.

The Royal Route and the City’s History

Along the Royal Route, 15 hare sculptures point the way between the individual stops. They are aimed at the youngest visitors and refer to important events in the city’s history. The figures thus serve both as waymarkers along the route and as storytelling prompts about the city’s past.

The Royal Route is complemented by information boards, interactive information kiosks, a printed guide and a mobile app. Different forms of guidance are therefore available: brief information on site, interactive options, and printed and digital resources. Before your trip, check whether the mobile app is available.

In the Wider Destination of Gniezno

Gniezno’s Old Town includes Tumska Street, which leads to the cathedral, the Market Square and its side streets, and part of Bolesław Chrobry Street. These streets and the square showcase different elements of the urban fabric. The Gniezno Doors are also part of this cultural context: cast in bronze in the 1170s or 1180s, they have been in the Archcathedral of Gniezno since they were made. Their images depict the life of Saint Adalbert.

Another historic site is the Greater Poland Uprising Memorial Room in Gniezno’s Old Town Hall. The memorial room contains an exhibition about the Greater Poland Uprising of 1918/19. The only surviving section of Gniezno’s city wall is next to the Church of the Holy Trinity and can be seen from Stroma Street. The Piast Trail also passes through Gniezno; the cathedral is a central point along this route.

Lake Jelonek is part of the wider destination’s landscape and borders Gniezno’s Old Town to the west. Four Eko Trakt information boards stand by the lake. They describe beaver habitats, the lake, reed beds and a wet meadow. The Eko Trakt is an approximately six-kilometre educational trail through Gniezno’s most interesting natural areas. Piastowski Park, by Lake Jelonek, has walking paths and an outdoor street-workout area.

The railway infrastructure can also be a useful point of reference when planning your trip: two standard-gauge railway lines run through Gniezno, line 353 from Poznań Wschód to Korsze and line 281 from Oleśnica to Chojnice. For specific travel plans, check current passenger services and timetables. The tourist information centre in Gniezno helps visitors find tourist sites, monuments and attractions, and provides regional maps and guidebooks. Before visiting, it is advisable to check the current opening arrangements.
