Ranfurly is an Art Deco town and one of the highlights along the Otago Central Rail Trail. Two themes especially shape a stay here: the architecture of the 1930s and the railway history that dates back to the town’s beginnings. You’ll encounter both in the townscape and in local exhibitions.

Art Deco and Railway History in Ranfurly

Ranfurly was founded in 1898 with the construction of the Central Otago railway line and developed into the centre of the area. In the 1930s, the town was remodelled in the Art Deco style. At the time, there was a great need for new buildings, partly as a result of fire damage. Restored Art Deco buildings from that decade are part of the townscape today; the Ranfurly Hotel is an iconic example of the town’s Art Deco architecture.

The Art Deco Museum is located in the Centennial Milk Bar. The Ranfurly Art Deco Gallery evokes the glamour and atmosphere of the Art Deco era with room-by-room exhibitions. For another artistic perspective, visit Janyne Fletcher’s gallery and studio in Ranfurly, where you can see her award-winning works capturing the beauty and character of Central Otago.

Ranfurly’s information centre is located in the old railway station and features an exhibition about the 1943 Hyde train disaster. This exhibition focuses on a single event; information panels at the Ranfurly Station sites provide general and historical information. Their arrangement may change.

Trails and Art in the Central Otago District

In the wider Central Otago District destination, the Otago Central Rail Trail is 152 kilometres long and classified as Grade 1. It is suitable for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, can be travelled in either direction, and is accessible at various points. The route is suited to a one- to five-day trip; most cyclists complete it in three to four days.

The Otago Central Rail Trail’s scenery includes mountainous, dry landscapes and river gorges, as well as tunnels, viaducts, historic homes and preserved gold-mining settlements. The trail thus connects the landscape with preserved railway heritage, without equating Ranfurly’s own Art Deco history with these features of the route.

Another type of tour in the Central Otago District is the Roxburgh Gorge Trail: it combines a 21-kilometre cycling ride with a 13-kilometre boat trip, is classified as Grade 2–3 and is designed as a one-day tour. The Central Otago Arts Trail offers a cultural focus, with gallery visits and opportunities to meet artists in their studios. You can also explore sculptures and murals there, each with its own backstory.
