Patearoa: Walks, Water and Gold History
Accommodation in Patearoa
Patearoa offers several specific starting points for planning a trip: the Sowburn Walkway, traces of gold history, a swimming hole on the Sowburn River and panoramic views over farmland. If you’re looking for a hotel in Patearoa, these themes can help you choose the focus of your stay—whether that’s walking and historic places, summer time by the water or views of the mountain ranges.
Sowburn Walkway and Gold History
The Sowburn Walkway starts at Patearoa and follows a loop towards the foothills of the Rock and Pillar Range. Part of the track follows the route of a disused water race that once supplied the town’s water. This brings together two different stories about water along the route: Patearoa’s water supply and the use of water in gold prospecting.
The walkway also passes historic gold-mining remains and huts, old gold miners’ water races, and the accommodation of early Chinese gold miners. These features give the track a clear connection to the gold-mining era. Anyone interested in the region’s history will find a range of traces here, from water infrastructure to miners’ accommodation.
Water, Sport and Local Life
There is a swimming hole on the Sowburn River in the Patearoa Water Supply Reserve. Top Bridge on the Sowburn is a very popular spot with locals and holidaymakers for swimming, picnicking and relaxing during the summer months. The season is therefore an important consideration if you’re planning to include these summer activities in your trip.
Patearoa Domain has a full-sized playing field and a pavilion with changing facilities. The war memorial is also located there. In town, a corrugated-iron building from the gold rush era is still used as a lending library. Patearoa also has a nine-hole golf course. These local features range from a sports ground and library to an option for golfers.
Landscape and Excursions
From Patearoa, there are panoramic views over farmland to the Rough Ridge, Rock and Pillar, Hawkdun and Kakanui ranges, as well as Mount St Bathans. Hamiltons Cemetery is nearby. Its grave inscriptions offer insights into the difficult living conditions of the pioneer era shaped by gold prospecting.
Anglers also use Patearoa as a base for excursions to the Taieri River and its extensive wetlands. Alongside walks and historic places, river landscapes are another possible focus. The excursion destinations on the Taieri River should be distinguished from places within Patearoa itself.
Patearoa and Other Walks in Central Otago District
Patearoa is off the Otago Central Rail Trail, but can be reached from Ranfurly or included in a loop drive from Waipiata. The wider Central Otago District destination offers further opportunities for walking and cycling. The Otago Central Rail Trail is 152 kilometres long, graded 1, and suitable for trips of one to five days. It can be ridden in either direction, with access available at various points.
The Roxburgh Gorge Trail offers a different time frame: it combines a 21-kilometre bike ride with a 13-kilometre boat trip, is graded 2–3, and is intended as a one-day trip. Comparing the trip lengths, modes of transport and time frames helps with planning: the Rail Trail is a longer trip, while the Roxburgh Gorge Trail combines activities in a day-trip format. These regional trails complement the options around Patearoa, but are not part of the Sowburn Walkway.
