Accommodation in Cromwell
Cromwell brings together historic sites, cycling and experiences around Lake Dunstan. Gold rush history and crafts take centre stage at the Cromwell Heritage Precinct; the Lake Dunstan Trail offers specific route options. There’s also a museum, a motorsport park, a seasonal market and a boat tour with a wine connection. You can choose the activities that matter for your trip.
Gold rush history on Lake Dunstan
The Cromwell Heritage Precinct features historic buildings from the 1860s gold rush. After Cromwell’s main street was submerged beneath Lake Dunstan, the buildings were rescued or rebuilt on higher ground. Today, they form the lakeside precinct, where the historic buildings are home to numerous craft businesses. The Precinct is a free visitor attraction for the whole family. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
The Cromwell Museum is located at Te Puna Mahara | Cromwell Memorial Events Centre, 36 Melmore Terrace. It is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm; as opening hours can change, it’s a good idea to check the latest times before your visit. The collection preserves archaeological artefacts and objects relating to Cromwell’s Chinese history, telling the story of Chinese miners’ lives. An excavation by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust before Lake Dunstan was finally flooded in 1992 uncovered insights into early Cromwell and its residents. Finds included moa bones from caves and middens.
Compare cycling routes by distance and difficulty
The full one-way Lake Dunstan Trail from Cromwell to Clyde is 41 kilometres long. Local shuttles are used to transport bikes and cyclists. A shorter route option is the section from the Smiths Way car park to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct: it is 16 kilometres long, graded Grade 1 or very easy, and takes approximately one to two hours.
Another option is the return trip from the Cromwell Heritage Precinct to the Bannockburn wineries. This route is 16 kilometres or longer and is graded Grade 2, or easy to intermediate. When comparing routes, note the different route types: the 16-kilometre Trail section runs from the car park to the Precinct, while the Bannockburn distance refers to a return trip. The stated difficulty grades also differ.
Museum and motorsport
Highlands Motorsport Park adds another attraction to the area’s historic sites. It has a 650-metre outdoor go-kart track with single and tandem karts. The park is also home to the National Motorsport Museum. Cromwell therefore offers both a go-kart track and a motorsport museum as distinct activities to choose from.
Market and boat tour
The Cromwell Farmers & Craft Market is held every Sunday from Labour Weekend until the Sunday before ANZAC Day. Offerings include fresh Central Otago stone fruit, local cheeses, merino wool and products, olive oil, tea, venison salami and fresh sausages. There are also herbs and salads, honey, jams and preserves, fresh baked goods, fresh flowers and crafts. Check the market dates and operating details before you travel.
Cromwell Winery Cruises combines a scenic boat trip on Lake Dunstan with visits to local wineries. The cruise crosses the lake and follows the Kawarau River; along the way, you’ll hear stories about Central Otago’s wine heritage, local wildlife and the history of the town beneath the lake. As the offering may change, check the provider’s latest information before booking.
