Waipiata can be understood through two closely connected themes: the Otago Central Rail Trail and the history of the former railway town. Waipiata Domain is beside the trail. In the town centre, Waipiata Hall Reserve has a small playground and a suitable spot for a picnic. The Domain’s facilities may change; check the latest information from the Central Otago District Council before your visit.

Waipiata on the Otago Central Rail Trail

The Otago Central Rail Trail was developed by the Department of Conservation in partnership with the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. With its many access and exit points, it can be used as a ride from one former railway station site to another. There is parking at the Waipiata station site. The trail can be ridden in both directions, and access is available at various points.

The Otago Central Rail Trail is 152 kilometres long, is graded 1 and is suitable for a one- to five-day trip. These details describe the entire trail, not a section in Waipiata. This distinction is useful for planning: the many access and exit points mean you can choose individual sections for a trip rather than planning to cover the whole trail.

Railway history in the town

Waipiata began as a railway construction camp. Railway gang workers continued to live there later on. The Waipiata War Memorial and the Cenotaph are beside the Rail Trail; the site of the former railway station is directly next to them. Waipiata Man, a work of art made from railway scrap, stands there. Information panels at the Waipiata station sites and at the Waipiata Gangers’ Shed provide historical context. The memorial, former station site, artwork and information panels highlight different aspects of Waipiata’s railway past.

The town’s industrial history is also part of the story: a rabbit-processing factory provided jobs in Waipiata for several years, until 1930. The railway transported the factory’s products from Waipiata to Dunedin. This brings out the connection between local work and rail transport, alongside the former station site, in the town’s history.

Cycling route and views in the surrounding area

Near Waipiata, a cycling route passes the former tuberculosis sanatorium on the hill and continues to historic Hamiltons Cemetery. The former sanatorium is now a religious retreat. The cemetery offers a view across the Maniototo Plain. The areas of focus are therefore distinct: railway and industrial history take centre stage in the town, while the route to the cemetery adds a view across the plain.

To get your bearings at your destination, use the different landmarks: the Rail Trail and its former railway station, the town’s memorial sites, and the cycling route in the surrounding area. When planning a trip, you can focus on the Rail Trail, the town’s history or the view from Hamiltons Cemetery.
