Xalapa: Cloud Forest, Plant Diversity and Museums
Accommodation in Xalapa
Xalapa brings together botanical collections, mountain cloud forest in a nature reserve, and a museum with exhibits on several cultures as well as contemporary Mexican art. Nature takes center stage in different ways at the Jardín Botánico Francisco Javier Clavijero and the Santuario del Bosque de Niebla. The Museo de Antropología de Xalapa focuses on culture. If you are looking for a hotel in Xalapa, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Botanical Diversity and Cloud Forest
Since its founding in 1977, the Jardín Botánico Francisco Javier Clavijero has maintained a scientific collection of living plants. It currently comprises 5,863 specimens from 1,001 taxa, 456 genera, and 153 plant families. These figures describe different levels: specimens count individual plants, while taxa, genera, and families refer to units of botanical classification at different levels. This makes it possible to understand the collection in terms of both its size and its taxonomic structure. The collection figures may change as specimens are added.
The garden also has three national collections of cycads, bamboo, and Pinguicula, registered with the Asociación Mexicana de Jardines Botánicos. Each collection includes more than 70 percent of the species native to Mexico in its respective group. The percentage therefore refers to a specific plant group in each case. The specialized collections have a different focus from the comprehensive collection of living plants: here, the focus is on clearly defined groups, while the broader collection is described in terms of specimens, taxa, genera, and families.
Southwest of Xalapa lies the Santuario del Bosque de Niebla, an approximately 30-hectare nature reserve where mountain cloud forest is preserved. The Instituto de Ecología (INECOL) protects the area. It serves as a refuge for the plant diversity of the municipality of Xalapa, as well as for a wide variety of bird species. While the Jardín Botánico is characterized by its plant collections, the Santuario is defined by its approximate area, the forest it preserves, and its role as a refuge. If you plan to visit the Santuario, check access options in advance.
Cultures and Exhibitions at the Museo de Antropología
The Museo de Antropología de Xalapa organizes its exhibits around several cultural themes. The two southern galleries showcase Olmec culture. They are followed by three galleries devoted to the culture of the central region, organized by cultural complexes. At the end are artifacts from the Huastec culture. This sequence makes the collection’s organization concrete: it moves from the southern galleries through the exhibits on the culture of the central region to the Huastec artifacts at the end.
The museum also has two rooms for temporary exhibitions: one on the main visitor-access level and the gallery on the mezzanine level, the second level. They are primarily used to showcase contemporary Mexican art, especially works by recognized artists. The exhibits organized by cultural groups and the spaces for contemporary art are therefore two distinct areas of focus at the museum.
