Coatzacoalcos
Accommodation in Coatzacoalcos
For a trip to Coatzacoalcos, you can focus on three specific themes: the coastal malecón, events held during certain festive seasons, and nature in the municipality. Walks, water sports, seasonal festivals and the municipality’s landscape offer different ways to tailor your travel dates to your interests.
Walks and activities by the water
Visitors and families can take a walk along the tourist coastal malecón. During the April 2026 holidays, vendors there offered a wide range of food as well as various other products. This specific holiday reference adds a culinary impression of the period to the walk.
Las Barrillas, in the surrounding area, offers another option for activities by the water: it is about 20 minutes from the city and offers opportunities for swimming and fishing. The two places offer different focuses: at the malecón, it is about walking along the coast; at Las Barrillas, about swimming and fishing.
Nature in the Municipality of Coatzacoalcos
At the municipal level, the Río Coatzacoalcos is described as water-rich and suitable for water sports. The municipality is also home to evergreen tropical forest, palm stands, mangroves and pastureland. Animals living there include armadillos, squirrels, rabbits, coatis and reptiles. Birdlife includes herons, grackles, pigeons, cranes and swallows.
A distinct natural attraction is Parque Ecológico Jaguaroundi, a voluntarily designated nature reserve in the Municipality of Coatzacoalcos. It covers 960.734884 hectares and was certified in 2002; its validity is stated as 99 years. Its ecosystems include evergreen tropical forest, freshwater mangroves, marshland and aquatic vegetation.
These nature features offer different points of interest: the Río is characterized as a water-rich river suitable for water sports, while Jaguaroundi is a named nature reserve with its own area and stated period of validity. Forest, mangroves, marshland and aquatic vegetation add to the landscape types found in the municipality.
Events and festive-season food
The Expo Feria de Coatzacoalcos takes place during Semana Santa, whose dates vary from year to year, and includes musical performances and amusement rides. Since the dates of Semana Santa vary on the calendar, check the event dates for your intended travel year if you want to plan your trip around them.
During Semana Santa, two carnival parades also take place in Coatzacoalcos along the coastal malecón by the sea. They are modeled on the parades of the former Puerto México. The parades thus differ from the Expo Feria: they follow a coastal route and draw on a historical model, while the Feria features musical performances and amusement rides.
There are also annual events with a culinary focus outside this festive season. On June 16, during the festival in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, stalls selling fried foods are set up in the adjacent streets. On November 1 and 2, for All Saints’ Day and the commemoration of the dead, regional snack and flower stalls are set up at the cemetery entrances. The dates are separate and the locations of the stalls also differ: in June, they are in adjacent streets; in November, at the cemetery entrances.
