José Cardel is the administrative seat of the municipality of La Antigua; most of the municipality’s services are currently located here as well. At the same time, cultural centers, Carnaval and historic routes tell different stories about the town. Anyone looking for a hotel in José Cardel can put their stay into context through these cultural and historical themes. For travel planning, it is especially helpful to distinguish between the Carnaval celebrated annually and older information about specific cultural programs.

Local History Between the Cultural Center and a Change of Name

The building, constructed in 1908, was adapted in 1984 to house the Casa de la Cultura de Cardel. The dates mark different milestones: construction was followed decades later by the adaptation for the cultural center. The town’s name has a separate history. Decree No. 139 was signed by the Legislative Assembly on May 29, 1925, and by Governor Heriberto Jara on June 12 of the same year. When it came into effect, San Francisco de las Peñas was granted villa status and renamed Villa José Cardel. This makes it possible to distinguish the timeline of the building’s development from the official change to the town’s name.

Earlier routes of travel are also part of the town’s history. From 1927, the old road used by stagecoaches was surfaced with gravel. With the construction of the Cardel–Veracruz road, the town moved closer to trade and population centers such as Veracruz and Xalapa. Ciudad Cardel is also regarded as a product of the Interoceanic Railway. Road construction and the railway connection represent distinct historical aspects of Cardel’s development.

Carnaval and Cultural Activities

The Carnaval festival takes place in José Cardel every year in March and April. Unlike in many places, it is celebrated there after the Christian religious observance of Lent. Carnaval therefore offers a recurring occasion to plan a trip around a specific festival.

In 2019, cultural Sunday events were held in the Ágora at Parque Revolución de Cardel. They entertained park visitors and developed into a family celebration. The cultural centers’ activities include dance and handicraft activities at Mi Casa de Cultura José Cardel, as well as art and craft workshops and events at the Casa de Cultura Municipal in José Cardel, described for the period from 2018 to 2021. The program offerings thus range from dance and handicrafts to art, crafts and events.

When planning a hotel stay, the time frame of each offering is important: Carnaval takes place annually in March and April, the Sunday events in the park are documented for 2019, and the cultural activities mentioned relate to the period from 2018 to 2021. If you are traveling specifically for a cultural activity, check the current dates in advance before setting your hotel dates. This way, you can plan your trip around a specific occasion without treating older program information as a current calendar.
