Choosing Tamiahua as a Destination

Tamiahua offers a range of reasons to visit: boat trips to beaches and lagoon islands, destinations in the reef area, and religious traditions and cultural sites. A stay focused on a boat trip raises different planning questions than a visit during Holy Week or on July 25.

Boat Trips and Travel Times

At the pier in Tamiahua, visitors can rent boats for trips to the beach and the lagoon islands of Isla del Idolo, Los Pájaros, Isla Frontón, Juan Ramírez, and del Toro. When planning, you can distinguish between the beach and the individual island destinations. Visitor guidance from CONANP, published on April 7, 2025, gives two reference travel times for boat trips departing from Tamiahua port: about one hour to Isla Lobos and about 40 minutes to the reefs of the Sistema Arrecifal Lobos Tuxpan. The difference between these approximate reference times is around 20 minutes; actual travel times may vary depending on conditions. If you plan to take a particular trip, confirm in advance which trips are currently offered and at what price.

Beach and Reef Area

The Sistema Arrecifal Lobos Tuxpan lies off the municipalities of Tuxpan and Tamiahua in Veracruz. It was designated a protected area on June 5, 2009. It includes six emergent reef structures and one submerged reef structure, as well as more than 30 coral species, 280 fish species, and other marine organisms. The area offers, among other things, scenic experiences and recreation. Barra de Corazones is another natural highlight: within the municipality of Tamiahua, the beach is known for its fine sand, gentle slope, moderate waves, and clear water; the surrounding area is characterized by pioneer vegetation. The beach features and reef structures, with their marine fauna, therefore offer distinct natural attractions.

Festivals and Cultural Sites

In Tamiahua, Holy Week in April includes a Passion play that is repeated the following day on the town’s main streets and ends on Holy Saturday. On July 25, a religious festival is held in honor of the Apostle Santiago, featuring religious observances and floral offerings. Holy Week and the July festival are two separate occasions. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates for the relevant year in advance.

The Santiago Apóstol el Pescador church is located in the municipal seat. The municipality’s cultural heritage also includes the ruins of Hacienda de San Sebastián and the archaeological ruins of the Comunidad de La Labor. A visit to the Museo del pescador and the murals by Mtro. Pepe Martínez was scheduled in Tamiahua for August 18, 2025. If you plan to visit these sites, check current access arrangements in advance.

When comparing hotels, you can start by deciding on the purpose and dates of your trip: the approximate boat travel times help you estimate how long excursions from the port may take, while the festivals mentioned offer specific dates to plan around.
