Abasolo: Archaeology and History
Accommodation in Abasolo
Abasolo brings together the archaeological architecture of Peralta, sites commemorating Miguel Hidalgo, and seasonal traditions. If you are looking for a hotel in Abasolo, you can plan your trip around these different highlights: the archaeological zone east of the municipality, the museums and monuments, or a leisure attraction.
Peralta: Architecture and the Route to the Archaeological Zone
The Zona Arqueológica Peralta lies east of the municipality of Abasolo and comprises 20 buildings. They stretch from the summit of the hill of the same name to lower-lying areas near the river. Architecturally, the zone features six of the eight different forms of hill architecture and sunken-courtyard architecture. Two buildings that have been explored and restored, La Mesita and El Divisadero, are considered suitable for public visits. Check current access arrangements before your visit.
An asphalt road leads east from Abasolo; the Zona Arqueológica de Peralta is 13 km away via the rancherías of San Isidro, La Peña, and Rancho Seco. As road conditions may change, check the route before setting out.
Seasonal Traditions and Culture
A variety of traditional dishes were prepared at the Feria de la Cocina Tradicional at the Zona Arqueológica de Peralta. The cooks preserved recipes passed down through generations. A report from March 2025 described visits to Peralta for the equinox as an annual tradition, with hundreds of visitors expected. The opening of the 50th Semana Cultural de Abasolo brought together artistic performances, music, and a celebration of the community’s talent.
The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Luz is the main church in the municipality of Abasolo and was built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Around Christmas, families visit El Nacimiento Viviente, set up in the atrium: different groups portray scenes from biblical history in this living nativity. The first commemorative plaque on the Ruta Histórica de la Cristiada was also unveiled at the parish church as part of the centenary of the Cristero War.
Museums and Memorial Sites
The Museo Miguel Hidalgo in central Abasolo preserves the only certified replica of the baptismal font in which Miguel Hidalgo was baptized. The collection also includes archaeological pieces from the Peralta and La Mina zones, dating from 300 to 900 AD. The museum thus brings together two distinct historical connections: the memory of Hidalgo and material evidence from the two archaeological zones.
A sculpture of Don Miguel Hidalgo was erected in December 1960 in Plaza Constitución in the historic center of Abasolo. The Estela de la Libertad is one of 262 Cabezas de Águila in Mexico and marks an important point on the Ruta de Hidalgo. This route commemorates the beginning of the independence struggle from 1810 to 1811. The stele is located in Abasolo because Miguel Hidalgo was baptized here.
Another Leisure Option
Balneario Los Pinos is a water park on the Irapuato–Abasolo road in Abasolo and is considered a refreshing, entertaining leisure option for the whole family. If you would like to include it in your trip, check current access arrangements before your visit.
