The history of independence comes to the fore at several named locations in Dolores Hidalgo: in a church, in museums, and in a historic house. At the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, Miguel Hidalgo proclaimed the Grito de Independencia in 1810. The church is designed in the Churrigueresque Baroque style, bringing an important historical moment together with a distinctive architectural form.

Independence in Museums and Historic Houses

The museums have different areas of focus. The Museo Ex Curato de Dolores presents around 80 objects in nine galleries on the life of Miguel Hidalgo and the Mexican independence movement. It is part of the historic Ruta de la Independencia. The Museo de la Independencia Nacional displays objects and documents about the independence movement, with a particular focus on Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The Museo Bicentenario, in turn, features 827 objects relating to the history of the first century of Mexican independence. Its interactive multimedia area also covers the Industrial Revolution and post-revolutionary Mexico.

The Museo Casa de Hidalgo offers another historical perspective. It is housed in a building dating from the late 18th century, known as the Casa del Diezmo, which was Miguel Hidalgo’s last residence before the independence movement began. This museum is also part of the Ruta de la Independencia. The different themes can help you choose: a life story, documents and objects relating to the movement, or a broader look at the first century of independence.

Cultural Sites and Traditions

El Llanito is seven kilometers from the center of Dolores Hidalgo and has deep Otomi roots. The town’s small community museum has a distinctive collection of religious ex-votos. The Templo del Señor del Llanito is another historic landmark: built in the 18th century, the church preserves religious tempera paintings by Miguel Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre.

The singer José Alfredo Jiménez is also commemorated at a specific site in Dolores Hidalgo. His remains rest in the Mausoleo José Alfredo Jiménez in the municipal cemetery. Opened in 1998, the mausoleum is decorated with multicolored mosaics depicting a mariachi sombrero and a colorful sarape.

Nieves, Cantinas, and Wine Experiences

Traditional nieves are sold on the Plaza Principal, including the regional flavors Garambullo and Borrachita. Traditional cantinas are concentrated in the historic center, one block from the ZĂłcalo. The individual venues are about a five-minute walk from one another. This offers two distinct ways to explore local treats: the named ice cream flavors at the plaza and the cantinas around the historic center.

Dolores Hidalgo is also part of the Circuito del Vino, which connects Dolores Hidalgo and San Miguel de Allende. Cuna de Tierra is the first stop on the Circuito del Vino. Visitors can learn about winemaking there and take part in a wine tasting. The wine and experience venue is located on the San Luis de la Paz–Dolores Hidalgo highway at kilometer 11 in Dolores Hidalgo C.I.N. For visitors interested in these experiences, it offers a different way to explore the destination than the museums.

Festivals and More Experiences

The Fiestas de Independencia take place every year from September 6 to 16. They include craft exhibitions, fireworks, and sporting events. Every November, Dolores Hidalgo also hosts the Festival Internacional de José Alfredo Jiménez, which features concerts, serenades, cantina tours, and food and craft exhibitions. The Fiestas de la Purísima Concepción take place annually from November 28 to December 8.

Alongside the museums, a tourist tranvĂa tour departs from beside the Parroquia de Dolores and visits some of the most significant historic landmarks in Dolores Hidalgo. Pehuame Temazcal offers a different focus: a traditional temazcal experience with steam and herbs for cleansing and healing. The options range from historic exploration and events to wine and temazcal experiences; when planning your trip, you can choose based on the themes that interest you most.
