Museum Visit: Miguel Hidalgo and Archaeological Heritage

The Museo Municipal Miguel Hidalgo preserves and showcases the historical, cultural and archaeological heritage of Abasolo. One of its two permanent exhibitions displays documents about the life and work of Miguel Hidalgo. The second is dedicated to the pre-Hispanic cultures of La Mina and Peralta in Guanajuato. This places biographical documents and the history of these cultures side by side in two clearly distinct exhibitions.

The museum also displays a faithful replica of Miguel Hidalgo’s baptismal font. Qualified staff from the Museo Nacional made it in 2017. The museum has four rooms for temporary exhibitions; topics range from the Mexican Revolution and Mexican traditions to works by local and regional visual artists. The permanent exhibitions, replica and rooms for changing themes offer visitors different points of interest, from local history to art.

Historic Sites in the City Center

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Luz is a historic monument in the city center of Abasolo. The Quiosco on Plaza Constitución is also one of the attractions in the historic center. A municipal description from 2022 stated that the Quiosco had adorned the square for 105 years. Families still gather there occasionally for recreation.

The church, square and Quiosco offer different perspectives on the historic center: the Parroquia is designated a monument, while the history of the square can also be read in its structure. In June 2025, a historical walking tour connected the city center with the Museo Miguel Hidalgo to introduce visitors to tourist and cultural sites in the municipality. This describes an activity that took place; when planning your trip, it is helpful not to mistake this historical walking tour for a current event date.

Exhibitions and Culture in Abasolo

Temporary exhibitions also offer insights into local topics. In 2024, a gallery in the center of Jardín Hidalgo displayed six photographs about the origins of local festivals. In March of the same year, the “Manos Creativas” exhibition in the historic center presented works in magic embroidery, ribbon embroidery, weaving, fabric painting, nail art and cardboard crafts. The examples thus range from photographic depictions of local festival traditions to various textile and craft forms of expression.

In June 2023, the “Jueves Culturales” program launched at the Centro de Desarrollo Comunitario in Colonia Lomas del Sol. Casa de la Cultura Abasolo coordinated the program with the aim of bringing cultural events to this area of the municipal seat. Together with the documented exhibitions, this illustrates different forms of cultural activity in the city: presentations in the historic center as well as a program for another area of the municipal seat.

Fiestas de Mayo and Semana Cultural

Abasolo’s Semana Cultural takes place every year from May 8 to 16. The traditional Fiestas de Mayo include the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Luz, celebrations marking the birth and baptism of Miguel Hidalgo, the Expo Feria, and the crowning of the queen and princesses. These events give an overview of the different occasions that come together as part of the traditional May festivities.

The 50th edition of the Semana Cultural brought together artistic performances, music and recognition of talent from the municipality in 2026. Performers included Ballet Folklórico Ecos del Bajío and Mariachi Juvenil Bajío. When planning your trip, you can distinguish the stated annual dates of the Semana Cultural from the specific events in any one edition.
