Lotbinière puts a clear emphasis on heritage, local history and landscape when planning a trip. The church, historic mill, tourist panels and trails offer different perspectives on the destination.

Heritage and Getting Your Bearings in the Community

The heritage-listed Catholic Église de Saint-Louis stands in the heart of Lotbinière, on the edge of the St. Lawrence River. It was built between 1818 and 1822; its façade was altered in 1888. Located between Chemin du Roy and the river, the church is also defined by its orientation: its choir faces east. Its construction date, later alteration and location give you several specific points of reference for understanding the building.

Another trace of history is the Moulin du Domaine-de-Lotbinière, a watermill built in 1799 for grinding flour. The building is one of the few structures that recall the first development centre of the Seigneurie de Lotbinière. The community’s historical highlights therefore include both the church and a structure with a clearly identified former purpose.

Tourist panels from the Cœur villageois initiative are spread throughout different parts of the village and help visitors discover the community. They draw attention to local history, local know-how and notable places. The Circuit patrimonial de Lotbinière adds the characteristic landscapes of the terraces along the St. Lawrence River to this orientation. The panels and trail offer different emphases: one focuses on history and places, while the other also highlights the landscape.

Walking Trails, a Cycling Tour and Cultural Experiences

The Sentier de l’Embouchure offers a 4.2-kilometre walking trail from the village of Leclercville to the Moulin du Portage site. Along the way, there are views of the Rivière du Chêne and its cliffs. When planning, both the stated route length and the trail’s scenic focus are relevant. As trail management and seasonal conditions can vary, check conditions before setting out.

Another way to explore the heart of the community is the Le Joly-De Lotbinière cycling tour. The community was founded in 1724 and is a member of the Association des beaux villages du Québec. Cultural offerings also complement the local themes: the former Saint-Louis procession chapel hosts art exhibitions. The seasonal cultural program may vary, so take this into account when planning your schedule.

More to Explore in the Greater Lotbinière Destination

In the greater Lotbinière destination, Domaine Joly de Lotbinière offers another heritage highlight. The cultural landscape complex was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2002 and was designed in the picturesque style. Lotbinière’s heritage trail also includes eight cultural heritage sites classified by Quebec’s Ministry of Culture and Communications. The trail can be explored on foot or by bicycle; there is a rest area for cyclists at the Centre Chartier-de-Lotbinière.

Regional offerings of wine, beer and seasonal experiences may also be of interest. La Charloise in the greater Lotbinière destination produces wines and rosés and sells its products directly on site. Check current opening arrangements before setting out. Oxymore Microbrasserie offers a tasting room and guided tours explaining the different steps of brewing and beer production; confirm current tour arrangements in advance.

For outdoor activities, Mont Radar at Mont Sainte-Marguerite offers more than four kilometres of trails. Activities include hiking, ropes courses, swimming, ATV and snowmobile riding, snowshoeing, Austrian sled runs, a rail toboggan ride and the discovery of military remnants. Some activities may be seasonal. In Val-Alain, Vallée Bleue-Distillerie offers blueberry picking; check whether the picking season coincides with your visit before making plans. This makes it possible to distinguish cultural, food and drink, and activity offerings in the greater destination without confusing them with the sights in the community itself.
