A stay in La Pocatière lets you combine culture, local history, and a variety of nature experiences. The options range from agricultural heritage and a walking tour of the town centre to gardens, a salt marsh, and hiking trails. Your choice will depend mainly on whether you’re more interested in collections and historic sites, a themed route, or natural and plant diversity.

Culture and Agricultural Heritage

The Musée québécois de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation focuses on knowledge and practices related to agriculture and food. Visitors can see ethnographic and zoological specimen collections, exhibits on historical customs and occupations, and reconstructed living spaces. Toys, instruments, and clothing from earlier times offer additional insights. The collections on display may be rearranged over time.

The museum was founded in 1974 and has historical ties to Canada’s first permanent agricultural school, founded by Abbé François Pilote in La Pocatière in 1859. The two dates mark different aspects of local history: the museum’s founding and the earlier educational institution with which it is associated. At the museum, you’ll encounter both objects and exhibits from earlier times, as well as agriculture and food as its institutional focus.

Pont du Collège is in the Saint-Onésime-d’Ixworth sector of La Pocatière. It is the only surviving covered bridge in the MRC de Kamouraska area and has been recognized as a historic monument since 2002. From the bridge, visitors can enjoy a view of a salmon river and the Chute du Collège waterfall. Parc des Souvenances is near the bridge and the Rivière-Ouelle; several panels there provide information about the area. The panels may be updated over time.

On Foot and on Nature Trails

The Circuit Fil Rouge La Pocatière is a walking tour with seven information panels in the town centre and an accompanying location-based audio story. The combination of panels and audio makes it a way to get to know La Pocatière on foot and through its local stories. The Sentiers de la montagne du Collège are natural hiking trails in the heart of La Pocatière. The Sentiers d’Ixworth, by contrast, focus on a specific nature trail: it is 2.2 kilometres long, follows the river, and provides information about the distinctive features of the area’s many ecosystems.

Boisé Beaupré has 10 kilometres of mountain biking trails for different skill levels, as well as 5 kilometres of hiking trails. Trail lengths may change if the network is redesigned. Your options therefore offer different experiences: a town-centre walk with information panels and an audio story, a nature trail by the river, or separate trails for hiking and mountain biking. If you’re looking for a specific trail length, the Sentiers d’Ixworth is listed as a 2.2-kilometre route; Boisé Beaupré’s trail lengths are given by activity.

Salt Marsh and Gardens

Halte marine La Pocatière offers privileged access to the St. Lawrence River and the salt marsh. Its permanent interactive exhibition explores the distinctive features and biodiversity of the Grande-Anse salt marsh and is divided into five interpretive themes. The exhibition focuses on both the salt-marsh habitat and its biological diversity.

Jardin floral de La Pocatière is in the heart of La Pocatière, on the edge of montagne du Collège. The botanical garden covers 2.5 hectares and features more than 600 plant varieties in specialized collections, as well as nine themed gardens. Lookout points offer panoramic views over the garden. Unlike the exhibition about the salt marsh, the garden focuses on curated plant collections and different garden themes; the Sentiers d’Ixworth, in turn, offers insights into ecosystems along a river.

History on Self-Guided Tours

Passeurs de mémoire offers 24 self-guided, geolocated tours exploring the area’s history and influence. Separately, custom genealogy walks trace the roots of the pioneer families of La Pocatière and Kamouraska. This lets you choose between a broad range of historical tours and walks focused on genealogy. Tour content may be updated.
