Nipissing: Discover Its History and Hotels
Accommodation in Nipissing
If you are considering Nipissing as a destination for a stay, its local history offers a clear focus for your choices. The Nipissing Township Museum preserves and presents the history of the Township of Nipissing and its surroundings; it is located in Nipissing Village. Nipissing developed into a hub for settlers and goods spreading throughout the township and its surrounding area. Arrival, road construction, and the museum’s founding mark different chapters of this history.
Settlement, Road, and Historical Milestones
The origins of the Nipissing settlement are associated with the arrival of John and Elizabeth Beatty in 1862. Construction began at the southern end of the Nipissing Colonization Road in 1864. The historic road ran from Lake Rosseau in the south to the village of Nipissing in the north. About a decade after construction began, it was complete along its entire length and passable by vehicles. The approximate time to completion and the two endpoints give the road a clear historical context; passability refers to that time.
The Nipissing Museum was founded in 1974 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Nipissing Road. Another milestone concerns the Rosseau-Nipissing Road: its section north of Highway 518 became part of the Trans Canada Trail in 1997. The dates place the museum’s founding and this section’s inclusion in different periods.
Church, Tools, and Traditions
The Nipissing Township Museum includes an original Methodist church, built around 1882. The first sermon in the log church at the museum was held in 1882. The details distinguish an approximate construction date from an event dated to a specific year, providing a time frame for the museum’s religious history.
The museum area known as the Hardware Store was used to demonstrate early skills and as additional exhibition space, particularly for agricultural equipment and tools. It includes tools that were important to the pioneers’ survival. The connection between these objects and early skills offers a glimpse into the practical side of local history.
A rare Loyal Orange Lodge drum is displayed in the log church. It was used in parades on the Twelfth of May. This adds an object associated with public processions and traditions to the churches and tools.
Sweets at the Museum
The museum’s candy and gift shop offers nostalgic sweets, fudge, and saltwater taffy. The Old-Fashioned Candy Shoppe opened in 2017. A 2024 description mentions candy sticks in twelve flavors, jelly beans, licorice, candied popcorn, and toffee; it also describes the shop as being designed in the style of an earlier store. The specific selection may change, so it is worth checking before your visit.
