Magnetawan: River, Locks and Local History
Accommodation in Magnetawan
Magnetawan is located on the Magnetawan River. Highlights for a stay include the lock and dam system in the town centre, the Heritage Centre Museum, a seasonal market and opportunities for outdoor activities. Depending on whether you are interested in local history, regional products or a water-based activity, these themes can shape your trip.
Local History at the Heritage Centre
The Magnetawan Historical Heritage Centre Museum houses an extensive collection of artefacts related to the region’s logging and agricultural history. A technical section features restored machinery and a turbine that powered the town’s first electricity supply. A hydroelectric plant was installed at the Heritage Centre site in the 1880s to operate Purdy’s Four Mill. The museum also preserves a log cabin built in the style of the 1930s. Together, these highlight different aspects of local history: regional work and agriculture, early electricity and hydroelectric power, and a building in a traditional style.
The museum visit also includes practical amenities. Visitors can borrow bicycles and recreational games for free during their time at the Heritage Centre. During the summer months, the museum also lends out beach toys free of charge. There is also a table for painting a community rock snake. Since the availability of these amenities may change, ask about current offerings before your visit.
Visit the Market and Shop for Regional Products
The Magnetawan Farmers Market enters its 36th season in 2026 and takes place every Saturday from the May long weekend through Thanksgiving. The market is scheduled to run from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Community Centre pavilion on Sparks Street. If you are planning your visit around the market, check the dates before you travel. Stalls offer Ontario-grown produce, fresh baked goods, local honey, maple syrup, jams, jellies and other products; the selection may vary by vendor. In 2026, local musicians will also perform each week. The market, its products and the music give the visit its own weekend character, distinct from a museum or walking day.
By the Water: Park, Art and Locks
Magnetawan Village Green Park is by the water and has a picnic area with tables. It is home to the public art installation “X” Marks the Spot and the Chainsaw Steamship Carving, a chainsaw carving added in 2024. If you would like to see the carving, check before your trip whether it is still on display. The park combines a waterside break with two distinct forms of public art.
Magnetawan is home to the Magnetawan Locks and Dam system. The locks and dam are on the Magnetawan River in the town centre. A municipal description from 2013 describes boating along the Magnetawan waterway through the locks between Ahmic Lake and Cecebe Lake, upstream or downstream. Before taking a boat trip, check whether the locks are currently in operation. This lets you plan a possible boat trip separately from land-based activities, without making your visit to town all about the water.
Hiking and Mountain Biking
A municipal description from 2013 mentions a 1.2 km hiking trail with a view of the historic lighthouse at the mouth of the Distress River. Check trail conditions before your hike. If you prefer mountain biking, consider the quiet country roads around the village of Magnetawan, which are suitable for mountain biking. The two options differ in character: the hiking trail has a stated length and viewpoint, while the surrounding country roads connect mountain biking to the area around the village.
To plan your visit, first decide whether you would like to focus on a museum visit, the market, time by the water or outdoor activities. The market and museum involve seasonal or time-specific details; for a boat trip, check whether the locks are operating. This lets you plan your stay around the experiences you actually want, without trying to fit every activity into the same day.
