Looking for a hotel in Wingham and deciding what themes you’d like to shape your stay? The town is connected to Alice Munro’s life story and features historic buildings in a variety of architectural styles. In summer, canoeing and sport fishing on the Maitland River offer additional activities. A family-oriented walking and reading trail and a fully accessible indoor aquatic complex offer other ways to spend your leisure time.

Literature and Local History

Alice Munro was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013; she was born and raised in Wingham. The Alice Munro Literary Garden is next to the North Huron Museum at 273 Josephine Street.

A self-guided tour of places connected with the author adds to the literary focus. For information, contact the North Huron Township Office at 274 Josephine Street. If you plan to take the tour, confirm that the brochure is available there.

Wingham also has a historical landmark with a precise date: the bronze monument at the Wingham Cenotaph, at the corner of John Street East and Veterans Road, was unveiled by Sir Arthur Currie on August 26, 1924. Cruickshank Park at 360 Josephine Street is dedicated to Doc Cruickshank, a broadcasting pioneer and founder of CKNX.

Buildings and Architectural History

The 1885 Pump House at the corner of Minnie Street and Water Street was designated for its architectural and historical value. The Donald McInnis House at 302 Centre Street was built in 1889 for Wingham merchant Donald McInnis and is of outstanding architectural quality. Wingham Town Hall & Heritage Theatre at 274 Josephine Street dates from 1890. It is designed in the Second Empire style; its mansard roof, round-arched dormer windows, tall windows and projecting tower define the building. The theatre is on the second floor of the town hall.

At Kent Block, at 176–178 Josephine Street, brick construction and its location at a major intersection shape its character. It is one of Wingham’s oldest buildings to have been largely preserved in its original state. The Bank of Hamilton building at 211 Josephine Street is also made of red brick, but in the Baronial style; it was the first branch established by the Bank of Hamilton.
