Sunshine Coast: Coastal Parks, Trails and Winter Sports
Accommodation in Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast offers a range of options to help you plan your trip: a waterfront park and water sports in Halfmoon Bay, trails through parks in Halfmoon Bay and Roberts Creek, and a designated winter recreation area in Roberts Creek. Each place has its own landscape and activities. Looking at the specific offerings can help you plan your trip around the recreational opportunities that matter to you.
Coast and culture in Halfmoon Bay
Coopers Green Park is a waterfront park in Halfmoon Bay with views across the Strait of Georgia. Its large, grassy, tree-lined grounds combine open green spaces with a waterfront setting. The park includes a swimming beach and a public boat launch for recreational boats. In summer, you can play beach volleyball on a sandy field; the park is also a popular place for diving. A barbecue area and washrooms round out the facilities. The park offers a range of waterside activities alongside opportunities to spend time in the green space.
The park’s name also has a special connection to the area: in Shashishalhem, Coopers Green Park is called tituls. The shishalh Elders Language Group chose this name for the large rocks in the park’s beach and water area. The name thus refers to specific features of the waterfront landscape and adds a cultural dimension to the recreational offerings.
Trails and parks in Halfmoon Bay and Roberts Creek
Connor Park and Welcome Woods have extensive hiking and cycling trails that run through Halfmoon Bay. Connor Park also has a large grass sports field, two baseball fields and a playground. It is also home to a bike skills area maintained by the local Sprockids organization. Washrooms are among the listed facilities as well. In addition to trails, the parks offer sports and play areas.
At Cliff Gilker Park in Roberts Creek, seven kilometres of forest trails pass numerous waterfalls, with wooden bridges crossing streams. There is also a 30-metre wheelchair-accessible trail with a viewing platform. Other park facilities include a sports field, a playground, a baseball field, covered and uncovered picnic areas, and washrooms. As bridge closures can affect access, check the latest official notices before your visit.
For navigation on the Suncoaster Trail, its endpoint is a useful reference: the trail currently ends at the intersection of Highway 101 and Homesite Creek Forest Service Road in Halfmoon Bay. If you plan to use this information for a particular hike, check it in advance.
Winter activities on Dakota Ridge
Dakota Ridge in Roberts Creek is a winter recreation area on a 1,532-acre plateau. For cross-country skiing, there are 20 kilometres of trails for both classic and skate skiing. There are also four kilometres of groomed snowshoe trails, three kilometres of wilderness snowshoe trails, and a tobogganing area. The different types of trails give you several ways to enjoy your winter stay. Seasonal operating conditions may vary.
For access, note that Dakota Ridge can only be reached by vehicles with four-wheel drive and tire chains. As winter road conditions can change, check them before setting out. One useful distinction for planning your dates: the beach volleyball court at Coopers Green Park is a summer offering, while Dakota Ridge brings together cross-country skiing, snowshoe trails and tobogganing in winter. If you’re looking for a hotel on the Sunshine Coast, you can weigh your travel dates and preferred activities together.
