White Sands on Buffalo Lake
Accommodation in White Sands
White Sands on Buffalo Lake
White Sands is on the southeast shore of Buffalo Lake. The summer village is therefore situated on the shore of a lake covering 124 km², or 55 square miles. White Sands has 5 km of natural, untouched shoreline and 4 km of natural beach. The area figure refers to the lake as a whole, while the shoreline and beach describe local features of the community. These different scales help you understand White Sands as a waterfront destination: the size of the lake, its natural shoreline and its beach each offer a different perspective on the community.
Beach Access and Water Sports
The beaches have eight public access points, open to residents and visitors. There are also several designated swimming areas. The access points provide public access to the beach, while the swimming areas are designated zones for swimming. There are no lifeguards on duty at the beaches.
The waters of Buffalo Lake near White Sands are suitable for wakeboarding, water skiing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing. Wakeboarding and water skiing are options alongside paddling activities on a stand-up paddleboard, kayak or canoe. You can choose based on the type of water sport that interests you. A boat launch is available to residents and visitors; its operating conditions may vary depending on water levels. If you plan to use the launch, check the conditions in advance. It is a separate planning consideration from choosing a water sport.
Winter Trails and Night Skies
When there is snow, you can explore scenic trails on snowshoes or cross-country skis. Snowmobiling is also possible in winter. White Sands also offers opportunities for stargazing and viewing the northern lights. Whether these sky-watching activities are possible depends on the weather and sky conditions. For planning purposes, the distinction is clear: snowfall affects trail use, water levels affect conditions at the boat launch, and the weather and sky affect the visibility of stars or the northern lights. This lets you consider conditions for daytime activities and evening nature watching separately.
Recreation and Events
A playground is also among the recreational amenities in White Sands; its condition and seasonal availability may vary. For family and community events, the White Sands Community Hall Society provides a space for rent. If you are planning an event there, check availability and conditions in advance. The playground and rental space offer different options for a visit: a recreational amenity in the community and a venue for planned gatherings.
Previous Stettler Public Library programs at White Sands Hall included “Come for a Byte” and the “Summer Reading Program.” Sessions were held on Wednesdays in July and August and were intended for children aged five and up.
