Stettler offers a variety of attractions to weigh up when planning your trip: local history, day trips by rail, parks, and recreational activities. You can explore historic buildings at your own pace, plan a ride through Alberta’s prairies, or choose activities in town. The experiences differ considerably—from a self-guided walk with a brochure to a journey in historic railway cars.

History in buildings and landmarks

At the Stettler Town and Country Museum, you’ll encounter a historic village with artifacts and buildings. The village-like site invites you to explore the museum at your own pace. Visitors can walk through schoolhouses, a courthouse, a church, and a farmhouse. The collection also includes a combined building with a grocery store, post office, and living quarters dating from the early 20th century. Access to individual buildings may vary.

Another historic landmark is the P&H Elevator, one of the last remaining grain elevator and feed mill complexes in Alberta. Guided tours are offered under the theme “Experience history in action”; their availability may change. Stettler United Church is also of heritage interest: it is an early and outstanding example of a United Church.

If you’d rather explore the history on foot, you can take the Downtown Historical Walking Tour with a brochure. You can get one at the Town Office or the Parks and Leisure Services Office. The brochure and the listed pickup locations provide a framework for the walk without requiring you to take a guided tour.

Train rides through Alberta’s landscapes

Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions offers day trips that start and end in Stettler. During the journey, passengers can relax in historic railway cars and travel through Alberta’s prairies. The trips also pass through wooded and hilly landscapes. This makes the train ride a different way to spend the day than a walking tour: you spend your time travelling by train and return to Stettler as part of the day trip. As excursion details may change, check the latest information before planning your trip.

Parks and outdoor activities

West Stettler Park has a variety of facilities: a fishing pond, playground, spray park, skate park, sports fields, and campground. A paved path circles the pond, with two pedestrian bridges and lighting. The skate park welcomes skateboarders, cyclists, scooter riders, and inline skaters. When planning your visit, you can choose between a path around the pond, the sports fields, and the park’s various amenities.

Rosedale Park has a different focus. It features inclusive play equipment, accessible paths, open green spaces, and picnic areas. The park is designed for people of all ages and abilities. When comparing the two parks, the facilities described provide a clear guide: West Stettler Park combines a pond path with sports and skating amenities, while Rosedale Park offers play equipment, paths, and picnic areas.

Sports, events, and culture

For bowling, Heartland Bowl offers five-pin bowling for players of all ages and skill levels. Stettler Golf and Country Club also caters to golfers of different skill levels, with picturesque prairie landscapes as the backdrop. Stettler Recreation Centre has a swimming pool and fitness centre. Outside the season, the centre’s floor is used for trade shows, lacrosse, roller derby, concerts, and special events.

Stettler Performing Arts Centre presents live concerts and theatrical productions, as well as community performances and special events. The program may change. Stettler District Agricultural Society is also part of the local events scene: it has been bringing the community together since 1907 with fairs, rodeos, markets, and community meals. These offerings differ from the train rides and historic walking tours, as they focus on performances, events, or community activities.

Planning your trip

Stettler Board of Trade Visitor Centre offers free Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, information, and souvenirs. Staff can help visitors plan their trips and offer advice on activities in the area. As visitor services may change, check the latest information if a particular service is important to your plans.
