Meliskerke is a ring village on a raised ridge resembling a creek ridge. The village was built on this elevated site because of the risk of flooding in the past. A ring road surrounds the cemetery and church in the centre of the village. Meliskerke has a rural character and is located in the agricultural region of Walcheren.

Churches and Architectural History in Meliskerke

The Odulphus Church is the older of the two churches in Meliskerke. Its tower and nave date from around 1400. The tower’s tilt is due to subsidence during construction. The building’s later history is also marked by changes: the church was reduced in size after a battle in the early years of the Revolt. Its furnishings include a pulpit with arched panels dating from around 1630. The construction date, changes to the church building and its furnishings thus point to different historical periods, rather than just a single construction date.

The Korenhoop Mill offers another glimpse into the local architectural history. Built in 1801, this flour mill is a round, stone, ground-level Dutch windmill. It was given its name in 2016, which was devised by pupils at the Boaz School in Meliskerke. A semi-detached house for workers is also among the village’s oldest houses. It stands at Valkenburgstraat 5–7 and adds another example of local architecture to the history of the churches and mill.

Ring Jousting, a Walk and a Cycling Route

The RVM ring-jousting competitions take place in Dorpsstraat and are free to attend. Since dates and arrangements may change, check the latest information before visiting. A local listing dated 1 May 2023 also mentions a guided group walk around the village, held every Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. For a cycling route, the same listing gives a distance of 25 kilometres: it was scheduled for the third Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m., from May to October. Check the current schedule before including either of these activities in your plans. The information also distinguishes between two formats: a walk around the village and a cycling route with a specified distance.

Rural Surroundings and Zeeland Traditions

Two walking and cycling links connect Meliskerke with the surrounding countryside, which can serve as a local recreation area. Check the condition of the infrastructure locally if you include these links in your plans. Sjezenrijden showcases Zeeland folklore, decorated horses, traditional costumes and festively adorned sjezen. These features give the tradition a distinct cultural identity; consult the latest information for specific dates.

The De Koehoorn farm shop is also part of the local offering. It sells fresh rolls, homemade ice cream and a range of regional products. Coffee, tea with pastries and filled rolls are also available in the shop or on the terrace. Since product availability and offerings may change, check what is currently available before your visit.

When planning your stay, it is helpful to distinguish enduring features of the village from activities that depend on specific dates: the ring-village layout, churches and mill shape the history of the village, while competitions and the group activities mentioned in a 2023 listing should be checked against the current schedule. This will help you understand Meliskerke as a destination through its history and rural surroundings, and plan your activities accordingly.
