Discover Aagtekerke: Village Church and Alpaca Experiences
Accommodation in Aagtekerke
Aagtekerke is surrounded by pastures and farmland. The village is home to the historic Dorpskerk on Dorpsplein and is connected with cycling around Walcheren; alpaca experiences also offer something specific to enjoy. If you’re looking for a hotel in Aagtekerke, these different aspects may play a part in choosing your destination: local history, rural surroundings or an activity with animals. Nearby, you’ll also find the De Manteling nature reserve and the sea dike at Westkapelle.
Landscape and cycling
Aagtekerke is considered a starting point for a cycling tour around Walcheren. De Manteling and the sea dike at Westkapelle are also nearby. Along with the village’s pastures and farmland, these add a nature reserve and a sea dike as further points of interest. The village landscape and these two destinations offer different ideas for planning your stay.
Alpaca experiences
Alpacas Zeelandia in Aagtekerke offers an alpaca beach walk throughout the year. It lasts one to two hours, is intended for people aged ten and over, and goes through the dunes and along the beach between Domburg and Westkapelle. The activity depends on booking and weather conditions; take these into account when planning. The experience combines a specified guided duration with a route through the dunes and along the beach.
Another year-round option at Alpacas Zeelandia is an alpaca high tea for people aged ten and over. It includes unlimited coffee and tea, as well as savoury and sweet treats, including authentic Zeeuwse bolussen. Booking is required. The high tea and the beach walk are different options: one includes food and drinks, while the other is a one- to two-hour walk subject to weather conditions.
On the experience trail at the Alpaca Rescue Centrum, visitors can stroll at their own pace along the pastures among alpacas and llamas. The trail is suitable for all ages and takes about 60 to 90 minutes; seasonal dates may vary. Interactive signs and videos provide information about alpacas and llamas. Unlike the beach walk, this trail runs alongside pastures and combines walking with information about the animals.
Village church and local history
The historic Dorpskerk stands on Dorpsplein. Its construction history spans different periods, each associated with specific parts of the building: the tower dates from the 15th century, and the single-nave main body from 1625. The tower and main body thus represent different periods in the church’s history, rather than a single construction date for the entire building.
During the Eighty Years’ War, the Dorpskerk was severely damaged in the course of the guerrilla fighting between the Sea Beggars and the Spanish on Walcheren from 1572 to 1574. The church also contains a tomb monument created by sculptor Rombout Verhulst for Hendik Thibaut, Isabelle Porrenaer and their daughter Jacoba. The church thus brings together its architectural history, the memory of the fighting at the time and the three people named on the monument.
Remains of a motte, or motte castle, are preserved at the St.-Jan-ten-Heere site in Aagtekerke. This historic site adds another trace of local history to the Dorpskerk.
