Zeist: Experience nature, parks and culture
Accommodation in Zeist
Zeist offers a variety of reasons to visit: enjoy nature on country estates and in forests alongside historic parks, exhibitions and museums. For planning your day, the specific places and routes are useful; they vary in both their theme and stated distance.
Slot Zeist and historic parks
The gardens of Slot Zeist are open to the public from 09:00 to 17:00. Check the opening hours again before you arrive. Slot Zeist was designed by Roman in the Dutch Classicist style. Guided tours take you into rooms that are not normally accessible; as the tour programme may change, it is worth checking the official schedule. Slot Zeist currently hosts changing exhibitions throughout the year. Check their dates in the programme before your visit as well. After walks or bike rides through the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, the Orangery serves coffee with homemade pastries, lunch, drinks and snacks. The offering may change.
Walkartpark lies between Slot Zeist and the centre of Zeist. This historic green park is a Rijksmonument with significant cultural and historical value. It is used for walks, meeting others and relaxation. Since 2015, an art trail has connected Slot Zeist with the centre of Zeist.
Forests, heathland and trails
Landgoed Heidestein is in the forests near Zeist, where areas of heathland and drifting sand have been preserved. The Schaapskooi Heidestein visitor centre is housed in a former potstal dating from 1884. The nature walk on Heidestein starts at the visitor centre. You can reach the entrance via Kerckeboschlaan, at the intersection with Hoog Kanje in Zeist. Bus route 58 serves the Hoog Kanje stop for the walk. Check access and bus information again before you arrive. In the Heidestein and Bornia area, there are two waymarked trails that can be combined into one route, as well as two routes for children.
Het Zeisterbos is a particularly old forest. When walking there, you may have the chance to spot birds such as the common redstart, tawny owl, goldcrest and marsh tit. De Boswerf also offers different ways to enjoy the outdoors: it has a nature play forest where children can play, and organises activities for all ages. De Boswerf is also a good starting point for walks, bike rides, adventure trails and treasure hunts.
Comparing culture and routes
The Het Hernhutter Huis Museum explores the history and life of the Moravians. In the permanent exhibition, you can see liturgical objects, hymn books, photographs, prints and posters. Guided tours also include a walk past squares, cemeteries and other places of interest.
For walks, you can compare two distances: the walking route on Landgoed Heidestein is 4.5 kilometres long, and the Culinaire Route Zeist is 6.7 kilometres. The latter passes restaurants, historic sites and natural landscapes of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, and starts at TOP Slot Zeist. Another walking route around Slot Zeist connects forests, country estates and paths through farmland. Bike rides past castles and country houses can also take you by Slot Zeist.
