Den Dolder offers several ways to shape your stay: the landscape of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, cultural history around the Willem Arntsz Hoeve, a historic cycling route and De Bloementuin with its seasonal offerings. When looking for a hotel in Den Dolder, your trip’s focus can be a starting point: would you like to explore natural areas, architectural history, or gardens and local life?

Landscape and walks

The Willem Arntszbos lies on the northwestern edge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Its landscape includes open areas, heathland, drifting sand, mixed woodland, avenues and a large field. These different elements give the place more than one landscape aspect.

You can walk freely in the Pleinesbos. The area also forms an ecological link between the natural areas north and south of Den Dolder. As well as offering a place to walk, it provides a view of the role the woodland plays between these natural areas. Local access rules may change; check them before your walk.

Cycle to historic sites

Fietstocht langs de grenzen van Den Dolder is a cycling route available to download as a PDF, passing numerous historic sites in Den Dolder. The start and finish are at the fire station on Dolderseweg, beside the entrance to Willem Arntszhoeve. The route brings together various historic sites in a single cycling tour.

In the northernmost part of Den Dolder, the route points to a Staatsbosbeheer sign for the Nonnenland walking trail. Route materials and signage may be updated; check the current PDF version before using the route.

The history of Willem Arntsz Hoeve

The Willem Arntsz Stichting complex has cultural-historical significance as an example of pioneering work in psychiatry in the early 20th century. Individual buildings on the grounds of Willem Arntsz Hoeve can also be placed in their historical and functional context. The farm at Willem Arntszhoeve was built in 1906 as its first occupational therapy building. The carriage shed with horse stable beside the farm is among the first buildings of Willem Arntsz Hoeve, founded on the heath near Den Dolder. As a historic part of the W.A. Stichting, it has cultural-historical and ensemble value.

The Gehoorzaal was built on the grounds of Willem Arntsz Hoeve in 1911. Its original function gives it cultural-historical value; as part of the site’s first development, it also has ensemble value. A route edition dated 29 May 2023 lists around 25 works of art there, interpreting the concept of art broadly. In this edition, they are mapped and accompanied by explanations.

The course of the Berkenlaantje is also part of local history. Before Willem Arntszhoeve was established, the lane connected the site of the Meerhuisje with Dolderseweg. The farm’s barn now stands where the Meerhuisje once stood. According to a municipal art-route publication for 2024–2026, it is a five-minute walk from Den Dolder station to the tree-lined grounds of Willem Arntsz Hoeve.

Station and memorial site

The island platform station in Den Dolder was built in 1913 for the Utrechtse Centraal Spoorweg Maatschappij. A memorial stone stands in front of the station building on Dolderseweg, and a commemorative plaque is displayed there as well. The memorial commemorates the railway strike from 18 September 1944 to 8 May 1945.

De Bloementuin Den Dolder

De Bloementuin Den Dolder invites you to visit its garden and greenhouses. Flowers, plants and fresh vegetables are available depending on the season. The place is a meeting point for sustainable local gardening and healthy, local food, as well as for topics such as nature, the environment and climate—right in the heart of Den Dolder and in partnership with the local community. If you are looking for specific flowers, plants or fresh vegetables, check the seasonal offerings before your visit.
