IJsselstein: Mills, Churches and Trails
Accommodation in IJsselstein
The Korenmolen De Windotter, together with the two churches, shapes the skyline of the fortified town of IJsselstein. In the historic centre, explore the town’s canals, surviving sections of the town walls and town gates on foot. Architectural history, walks, longer trails and excursions on the water offer different perspectives on IJsselstein.
Town History and Museum
The Kasteeltoren is the surviving Loyertoren, dating from the 16th century, of the former Kasteel IJsselstein. The castle is considered the origin of today’s town. The Kasteeltoren is one of the Museum IJsselstein’s satellite locations for exhibitions. Inside, visitors can see the elaborately brick-built spiral staircase with its ornate vaults.
During Museum IJsselstein’s opening hours, the Kasteeltoren is open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, between 1 pm and 5 pm; tower attendants are present during these hours. Check visiting times before you set off. The museum presents temporary exhibitions on topics that play a role in society. Its account of the town’s history does not follow a traditional chronology: it is organised by emotional themes and spans from the Iron Age to the present day. Freedom, pride and hope are among the feelings explored.
Churches, Architecture and Music
The late Gothic Oude Nicolaaskerk was built around 1307 and dedicated to Saint Nicholas in 1310. If you would like to visit the church with a guide, this can be arranged on request on days other than Sunday; the tour is led by UIT in IJsselstein. A series of organ concerts takes place there every summer. From October to June, there is also a half-hour Bach concert on the first Saturday of each month. You can check the specific concert dates in advance.
The Sint Nicolaasbasiliek offers a different architectural accent: the three-aisled hall church was built in 1887 in the Neo-Gothic style, based on a design by architect Wilhelm Victor Alfred Tepe. On 11 November 1972, it was awarded the title of Basilica Minor. The basilica is also home to the image of Mary, O.L.V. van Eiteren, which has been venerated for centuries.
Milling and Products
The operational Korenmolen De Windotter dates from 1732 and can be visited at least five days a week. Groups, school classes and businesses can also visit the mill; arrange these visits in advance. Wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt, maize and buckwheat are ground there into flour or meal. The mill shop is open to all visitors and offers a wide range of mill products. If you have specific products in mind, check their availability in advance.
Exploring on Foot and by Bike
For walks in green surroundings, the IJsselsteinse Bos offers a contrast to the canals and town gates. This young polder woodland is characterised by tall poplars as well as alders, oaks and ash trees. A boardwalk crosses an area of water; avenues and winding paths invite you to explore on foot. In autumn, you can pick apples in the pick-your-own orchard and gather nuts, if available.
The Hollandse IJsselpad also combines nature with local history. The waymarked walking trail starts at the source of the Hollandse IJssel at Klaphek in IJsselstein and leads to Gouda Governelle. It also connects IJsselstein, Montfoort and Oudewater. Much of the route follows former unpaved towpaths along the historic river landscape. Check the route details before setting out.
Two cycling routes of different lengths are available. The approximately 33-kilometre Rondje IJsselstadjes starts and ends at UIT in IJsselstein Tourist Info and follows the water and meadows through Oudewater, Montfoort and IJsselstein. The approximately 50-kilometre Waterrijk Leidsche Rijn–IJsselstein route can be cycled in two stages, including a dedicated IJsselstein loop. The route lengths and division into stages provide a practical guide for planning; route details may change.
Boat Trips and Rentals
A sightseeing cruise through IJsselstein passes numerous monuments, including a former peelers’ shed, the two Sint Nicolaaskerken and the Korenmolen De Windotter. Check the timetable in advance. Sloops, motorboats and canoes are available for hire at TOP Marnemoende; check availability.
