Nieuwegein: Forts, Waterways and Art
Accommodation in Nieuwegein
Fort Jutphaas combines a green setting with historical monuments. By the water, you can walk or run; two bridges take you to the fort, where you can see more historical monuments. Fort Jutphaas is in Nieuwegein and is part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. The waterline was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2021.
Forts and Waterways
Vreeswijk also tells the story of the waterline. The present-day Fort Vreeswijk dates back to 1855 and, together with the defensive rampart, was an important part of the defence line. In Vreeswijk’s historic centre, you can stroll past old locks and ships. Museumwerf Vreeswijk restores, repairs and maintains old inland vessels. It also offers boat trips along the Vaartse Rijn, the Merwedekanaal and the Doorslag.
Rijnhuizen Castle dates back to around 1637 and is one of the few castles in Nieuwegein to have survived to this day. If you’re interested in routes by the water, there are walking and cycling routes along the Lek. The “Langs Lek en Linie” cycling route explores part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie near Schalkwijk, Nieuwegein, Houten and Bunnik.
Architecture and Art Tours
“Jong Erfgoed” is a five-kilometre urban walk exploring Nieuwegein’s post-1965 heritage and notable architecture from 1965 to 1990. “Sprekende Beelden” offers a different perspective: this nine-kilometre cycling or walking route passes eleven works of art from the Buitenmuseum Nieuwegein collection. QR codes beside each work link to stories about the artworks.
The Street Art Route passes fourteen locations with murals, on foot or by bike. The Street Art cycling route is approximately ten kilometres long. These distances provide a clear guide when choosing a tour: five kilometres for “Jong Erfgoed”, nine for “Sprekende Beelden” and approximately ten for the Street Art cycling route.
Green Spaces and Nature Activities
The Oudegein estate combines a Renaissance-style layout with straight avenues bordered by ditches, rectangular plots, orchards and meadows. There is also a landscaped park that’s ideal for walks. Birds can be observed along the avenues and waterways all year round.
Natuurkwartier is located in Oudegein Park and brings together nature and culture. It has a Kabouterpad and a nature playground. Exhibitions cover the history of the villages of Jutphaas and Vreeswijk, as well as the medieval town of Gein. They include prehistoric finds, photographs and art.
Kinderboerderij IJsselstee is housed in the outbuildings of the historic farmhouse of the same name and is home to a varied collection of small domestic animals. The grounds also include a playground; the animals are fed daily at around 3 pm. Check the feeding time before you arrive.
Culture and Activities
