Rhenen brings together a striking landscape and a wide-ranging cultural offering. Grebbeberg is the easternmost hill of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug push moraine ridge and marks its abrupt end. An elevation difference of more than 50 metres opens up views of Blauwe Kamer, the Nederrijn and the Betuwe. Hiking and cycling trails, churches, museums and animal encounters offer different ways to plan your trip.

Grebbeberg and Blauwe Kamer

Marked hiking trails lead across Grebbeberg. Check local access conditions before setting out. The Blauwe Kamer nature reserve is nearby. The Nederrijn flows freely there, continually changing the natural landscape. Signposted walking paths lead through the area and are intended for adults and children. A wheelchair path reaches a viewpoint; check trail conditions before your visit. Parking at Blauwe Kamer is limited, so visitors are asked to travel by bicycle if possible.

Hiking Trails and Exercise

At Kwintelooijen, you can choose between two marked hiking trails of 1.5 and 3 kilometres and a 2.7-kilometre mountain biking route. The distances also indicate the type of activity: the two shorter distances are hiking trails, while the 2.7-kilometre route is for mountain biking. Kwintelooijen is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Before visiting, check whether any temporary restrictions apply.

The Willem Sanders Trimbaan offers another type of route: the 1-kilometre woodland loop passes wooden exercise stations. Rhenen also has an exercise route through the town and another through the forest. Posts along the routes have QR codes that link to exercise videos. The routes therefore differ not only in their stated lengths, but also in the type of activity and the surroundings.

The Plantage Willem III hike is 4 kilometres long and follows hilly terrain through woodland and open countryside. The route includes a long, gradual ascent and descent; Plantage Willem III is part of Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. In addition to the distance, the terrain description can help you plan your route. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Animal Encounters and Visitor Information

At Ouwehands Dierenpark, the experiences listed include close-up encounters with polar bears, the covered RavotAapia jungle playground and the Expeditie Berenbos adventure area. Pandasia offers the chance to see giant pandas Wu Wen and Xing Ya, as well as other Asian animal species, in a traditionally Chinese-designed setting. Animal presentations may change; check current visitor information in advance. The park is accessible to people with disabilities and wheelchair users. Check the current facilities before your visit.

Church, Museum and Modern History

In the Middle Ages, Cunerakerk became an important pilgrimage church and is associated with the relics of Saint Cunera. Its tower is 82 metres high. Inside is a rare surviving Renaissance rood loft dating from around 1550. The church is open free of charge outside scheduled events and activities; a staff member on site can provide information about its history and use. If you are planning a visit, check the current schedule in advance.

Stadsmuseum Rhenen explores archaeology, local history and art under three themes: “Treasures”, “Conflict” and “Beauty”. A Bronze Age burial urn illustrates the archaeological focus: it was found on Koerheuvel in Rhenen and is about 2,800 years old. The Grebbelinie Information Centre has an exhibition about the fighting in May 1940. It focuses on the fighting around Grebbeberg and other events in the Netherlands. The centre was renovated in 2025; checking current exhibition information before your visit is helpful.

Routes Through Cultural Landscapes and River Country

The Grift en Graftenpad passes through the agricultural countryside around Rhenen, over Laarsenberg and along the Grift. The trail takes its name from the graften on Laarsenberg: vegetated hillside terraces thought to date from the Middle Ages. Check local trail conditions before setting out. TOP Rhenen Centrum is in the historic centre and serves as a starting point for exploring the landscapes of Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Rhine.

The Fietsen langs de Rijn cycling route also offers a clear planning consideration: it includes two river crossings by ferry. As ferry availability may vary by season or operation, it is advisable to check the ferries for your planned travel date. The Klimmen bij Veenendaal route passes through Veenendaal, medieval Rhenen and Elst. The two routes therefore each have a distinct feature: ferry crossings on one, and the sequence of places named on the other.
