If you’re looking for a hotel in Wierden, it’s worth first considering what you want to focus on during your stay. Wierden offers opportunities to enjoy nature, outdoor activities, water and cultural history: from the Wierdense Veld to the trails and water activities at Het Lageveld, and the historical themes of the Molukse Wijk and Pleisterplaats De Barkel.

Nature at the Wierdense Veld

The Wierdense Veld is designated as a Natura 2000 site. From mid-May to 1 November, a flock of around 700 sheep grazes there. This gives the nature experience a seasonal aspect: grazing is described for this period. If you’re interested in landscapes and nature conservation, this offers a specific point of interest to include in your travel plans.

Wierden’s character also has a historical side: it is an old esch village with a lively past. This description adds a look at the town’s history to its nature themes, without requiring you to focus on a single attraction.

Walking and cycling

The 6-kilometre “Cultuurhistorisch Wierden” circular route passes through a distinctive Molukse Wijk and a characteristic landscape. It starts at Wierden railway station and is marked with yellow direction arrows and a footprint logo. Its name, length, starting point and markings give you specific details to consider when choosing a route that combines culture and landscape.

Water and cycling routes at Het Lageveld

Het Lageveld includes a natural recreational lake with a large sandy beach, a deeper surfing pond, and a shallow swimming and children’s pond. There is also a separate paddling pool for the youngest visitors. The children’s pond is no more than 80 centimetres deep. A raft ferry takes you to an island. The different areas of water therefore vary, among other things, in their depth and the names used for them.

Het Lageveld also offers trails and cycling routes: there are walking paths in the adjacent forest, and the recreational cycling network is accessible from here. A 4.6-kilometre singletrack runs through Het Lageveld. It is part of the 35-kilometre mountain bike route around Wierden. The two distances refer to different scales: the individual trail and the larger route.

Cultural history in Wierden

In Wierden, the “Katong Kemana” monument is located in the Molukse Wijk. It was unveiled after the neighbourhood was renovated. The name loosely translates as “Where we are going,” giving the monument a distinctive connection to movement and finding one’s way.

Pleisterplaats De Barkel is an information point for cultural history and archaeology. Modern techniques are used there to present the history of the area around Landgoed de Barkel. The grounds include a reconstruction of a burial mound in an attractively landscaped garden with historical planting. The archaeological display and the garden design can thus be appreciated together.

De Barkel also offers locally made products, such as homemade apple pie. Alongside cultural history and archaeology, the offering therefore includes a specific local product. These different themes come together to help you explore Wierden: nature and seasonal grazing, trails and water activities, and local and cultural history.
