Wierden has many different sides: raised bog shapes the landscape of the Wierdense Veld, while Enter’s history is linked to clog makers and boatmen. The Regge is also part of the area’s character. When choosing a hotel location, travel connections can be a useful starting point: Enter is right by the A1. Wierden is close to the A35 and N36 and is easy to reach by train from Deventer, Enschede and Zwolle.

Raised bog, river and birdlife

The Wierdense Veld is a Natura 2000 nature reserve between Nijverdal and Wierden, known for its raised bog. Heather and small birch woods shape the vegetation; adders and cranes also live there. While walking, you can observe unusual plants and animals. The area combines a distinctive landscape with the chance to look out for its flora and fauna along the way.

The Regge also tells a story of change: it has been restored to its original state and once again meanders freely through the landscape between Twente and Salland. The Dakhorst nature area serves both as a nature reserve and as a water-retention basin, and attracts many bird species. It offers opportunities for birdwatching and capturing reflections on the water, especially at sunrise and sunset. The raised bog, free-flowing meandering river and water-retention area each offer a different draw for nature lovers.

Walking routes and trails around the towns

Ommetje De Barkel is an approximately 8 km walking trail around the village of Hoge Hexel. It passes through the esch landscape and the woods around the village, following the Wandelnetwerk Twente. Green arrows and the Ommetje logo mark the route; markers may change during maintenance work. Vriezenveen station is listed as the public-transport option for getting there. From the station, it is 3.5 km to the starting point, and an OV-fiets rental bike is recommended. Connections and rental-bike availability may change.

Ommetje Zuna is a signposted walking route of about 5 km through farmland, along hedgerows and beside the Regge. The Twente Walking Network links signposted routes via numbered junctions, including routes from 3 km long. The walking trails described therefore differ both in length and in the landscapes they pass through. Ommetje Rectum-Ypelo passes, among other places, a water extraction area, old farmhouses, landscapes and newly created nature.

In Enter, walkers can take a loop around Schaatsvijver De Lee; the footbridge reopened in July 2025. Another option along the Regge is an excursion starting from the TOP de Wisselmaat car park on Enterweg in Wierden. It covers about 6 km and includes a short break along the way; dates depend on the season and programme. A manually operated pedestrian ferry across the Regge also lets walkers and cyclists cross the river. Check whether the ferry is operating before setting out.

Enter: clogs, boats and craftsmanship

Enter was once a boatmen’s village; the navigable Regge played an important role in trade and transport. Enterse Zompen had a flat bottom, could travel in very shallow water about 45 cm deep, and were built in Enter from the 16th to the 19th century. The Zompen Museum explains this maritime history. De Enterse Waarf offers trips on an authentically reconstructed Zomp along the Regge and explains the river’s historic importance as a waterway, as well as the decline and revival of the Zomp. Sailing dates and booking options may vary; check in advance.

The clog-making tradition is explored at Klompenmuseum Sköpke, which presents the history of the Enter clog, clog makers and their tools. The museum is closed until the end of 2026 for renovation work. The Oudheidkamer BuisJan covers historic shops, clothing, lace caps and rolled linen from Enter’s past. Visitors can also try on traditional clothing worn by a farmer or farmer’s wife. Wagenmakerij Langenhof demonstrates machinery that is a hundred years old and explains the centuries-old craft of the wheelwright.

Art, wine and local produce

Ingrid Groeneveld’s Groot’n Jans gallery displays paintings, ceramics, sculptures, glass art and jewellery, and offers workshops for children and adults. Exhibitions and dates may change. De Wijnmakers sells wine at its wine shop by appointment; from April to September, it offers wine tastings or vineyard tours on Sundays. Arrange a purchase or visit in advance. The Twentse Boerderijwinkel Zunakaas farm shop sells farm cheese, dairy products, meat and other regional produce; the selection may vary.

A yearly highlight in July is the Wierdense Zomerfeesten, or Wiezo, with music, a market, art and street theatre. Exact dates and programme items may change from year to year. Alongside nature and regional crafts, Wierden also offers seasonal events to consider when planning your stay.
