Tilligte combines engineering history with a rural setting. If you are looking for a hotel, these different attractions can help guide your travel plans: a historic weir on the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal, a Dutch-style windmill just outside the town centre, and a chapel on the edge of town. The surrounding area is characterised by open spaces, old farmhouses and winding sandy paths. You can tailor your stay to your interests in water engineering, milling history or the landscape.

Water Engineering and Canal History

The Schuivenhuisje, also known as the Dinkelhuisje, was built in 1887 on the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal. Its distinctive steel sluice-gate construction regulated the water level with the help of the Dinkel. The structure therefore served a specific water-engineering purpose as a weir. Its design makes the link between form and function clear: it was part of the water-level regulation system. Anyone interested in engineering history can understand the Schuivenhuisje not only through the year it was built, but also through its former purpose.

The Schuivenhuisje ceased to serve its original purpose in 1960, when the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal was closed to shipping. Its use for water regulation and the later period after shipping ended are therefore distinct chapters in its history. The structure was extensively restored in 2005. On its right-hand exterior, visitors can activate a film inside by placing their palm on it. If you plan to use this interactive feature, check in advance whether it will be available during your visit.

Windmill and Chapel

The Westerveldmolen is on Frensdorferweg, just outside the town centre of Tilligte. The Dutch-style windmill was built in 1865 and fully restored in 1984. These dates mark its construction and later restoration as separate stages in its history. The volunteer miller regularly grinds grain into flour at the mill, and the flour can also be purchased there. If you are planning a visit or a flour purchase, check current visiting arrangements and availability in advance.

The Mariakapel on the edge of Tilligte tells a different story of construction: it was built by volunteers in 2003. This religious building and its origins in volunteer work complement the themes of canal engineering and grain milling. The sites offer different points of interest for your travel plans: the weir is about its former function, the mill about grain processing, and the chapel about its origins.
