Rossum: Routes, Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Rossum
Rossum is surrounded by a bocage landscape typical of Twente. Hedgerows, esker fields and old farmhouses provide the setting for walks and bike rides. When planning a stay, you can choose different focuses, from nature reserves and marked circular routes to longer trails and local cultural sites. The routes range from numbered circular trails to the seven-day Hilligenpad; historic buildings and local landmarks complete the picture of the village.
Hiking and cycling in the landscape
In Rossum, you can walk and cycle among hedgerows, esker fields and old farmhouses. Rosummermeden, a nature reserve with opportunities for both activities, lies northwest of the village. In Volthe, a walk through the esker landscape can begin at Partycentrum Hutten or the Rabo de CoCeR cultural centre; both are possible starting points with parking.
At the southwestern edge of Rossum, in the hamlet of Lemselo, a hiking trail runs through a landscaped area. From there, Rossum’s church tower is occasionally visible. At Havezathe het Everlo in Volthe, you can follow marked hiking trails from the parking area. These routes have different starting points and settings: from the esker landscape in Volthe to the trail in Lemselo, where the church tower is sometimes in view.
Circular routes, long-distance trail and cycle route
Two marked circular trails start at the parking area near Het Everloo in the Roderveld nature reserve near Oldenzaal. One is 1 kilometre long and the other 3.5 kilometres. Their stated lengths clearly distinguish the two routes and give you a concrete guide for planning your day.
The Hilligenpad offers a different kind of route: it is a seven-day contemplative trail through the Twente landscape. The third day leads from Rossum via the Dal van de Mosbeek to Tubbergen and starts at Kanaalweg Noordzijde 1, 7596 Rossum, near the Hunenborg. Check the latest route details before setting out, as local route information may change.
There is also a detailed route description for a bike ride. The Z-Fietsen Beuningen en De Lutte route starts in Rossum, passes through Beuningen, the Lutterzand and De Lutte, and returns to Rossum. It is about 39 kilometres long. This makes it easy to distinguish from the Roderveld circular trails described in kilometres: it follows its own route and passes through several named places.
Nature and history at the Hunenborg
The Hunenborg is a ring-fort dating from around 1050. Its wooded remains include a main fort and an outer fort that is barely visible. The Hunenborg is also part of the AVAV (Achter de Voort, Agelerbroek en Voltherbroek) Natura 2000 site. The area is rich in purple moor-grass meadows, swamp forests and small bodies of water. At the Hunenborg, archaeological traces sit alongside the landscape of a protected area.
The Roderveld nature reserve near Oldenzaal has deciduous and coniferous forests, as well as wet heathland with plants and animals. The former railway line between Oldenzaal and Denekamp now serves as a hiking route. In its present use, it connects the former railway track with a trail through the nature reserve.
Church and local landmarks
St Plechelmus Church in Rossum is a cruciform church built of yellow machine-made bricks. Its broken-pitched roof is covered with red Roman tiles. The term “cruciform church” describes the building’s layout, while the broken-pitched roof is a feature of its roof design. The church in Rossum also has stained-glass windows.
Near the entrance to the church in Rossum is the Mariagrot, a place of worship. Parish priest H. Thijert consecrated it in early October 1990. A Calvary was built in Rossum’s cemetery in 1909. These two places offer a glimpse into the village’s religious memorial sites, but differ in their location and form.
The roadside cross on Boschweg was erected in 1939 beside a mighty oak at the edge of an esker field, about half a kilometre outside Rossum. Just outside the village on Everlostraat is also a restored Tuffelkeller, a semi-underground storage building. Rossum’s Kroezeboom also stands on Boschweg and serves as a rest stop during a bike ride.
