Agelo: Hiking and Local History
Accommodation in Agelo
Agelo combines hiking with a clear connection to local history. If you would like to take both into account when planning a stay, trails and cultural sites offer concrete starting points. The focus is on the historic hiking route “Rondje Agelo – Wandelen langs de sporen van WOII”, a blue route that includes Kipboomkapel and Landkruis Agelo.
Hiking with a Historical Focus
The “Rondje Agelo – Wandelen langs de sporen van WOII” route is about 13 kilometres long. Its information panels explain acts of sabotage, hiding places and everyday life during the Second World War. This connects different aspects of wartime, from individual actions and addresses to daily life. Both the approximate route length and its historical themes can help guide your travel planning: you can decide whether the route’s cultural focus matches your interests.
The Kluppelpad section of the route lies within a Natura 2000 area and has been carefully integrated into the landscape. The route also includes a reconstruction of the historic Kluppelpad at Steenmatenweg. Remains of a former German searchlight camp, including large concrete blocks, have been put back in place at the Kluppelpad. The landscape setting, reconstructed path and remains of the former camp thus represent different aspects of this section.
Chapel and Land Cross
Kipboomkapel stands at the intersection of Kipboomweg and Weerselosestraat. It was built in the Saxon style using sandstone, old bricks and timber framing. Its construction and materials give you concrete points of reference for understanding the chapel as an architectural destination in Agelo: both its architectural style and the materials used are part of its description.
Landkruis Agelo is also known locally as “'n Boaken”. In the past, the large farmers of the Agelo marke distributed bread to those in need at this land cross. The farm names of these farmers can still be seen on the large erratic boulders around the cross. In this way, the tradition of distributing bread and a visible detail—the names—stand side by side. The local name, the history of helping those in need and the farm names on the boulders offer different connections to the land cross’s past.
Route Features and Practical Information
The blue route starts at Groot Agelo in Agelo. It follows the sandy Oppersveldweg and crosses both Hollandergraven and Molenbeek twice. The routes can be compared using different points of reference: “Rondje Agelo” focuses on the approximate distance and historical information, while the blue route has a clearly specified starting point, sandy path and repeated water crossings.
A public drinking water tap was put into operation at the tourist information point on Borgstadweg on 3 November 2025. It is intended as a sustainable facility for everyone exploring the area. If you plan to use the tap, check before your visit whether it is available.
A local food offering is another practical stop: since 2020, Aogeler Rund has sold meat from its own Limousin bulls directly from the farm. The monumental Aogeler Rund shop offers Beter-Leven beef from a self-service freezer. If you plan to visit the shop, check the opening arrangements in advance.
