Velsen: Coast, Bunkers and Historic Gardens
Accommodation in Velsen
Wide beaches, expansive dunes, rugged harbours, wooded country estates and green recreational areas define the municipality of Velsen. Between the coast and cultural attractions, nature experiences, maritime themes and historic sites go hand in hand. Visitors planning a stay can explore many different sides of the area.
Beach, Harbour and Routes
Windsports and watersports, including surfing, kitesurfing and blokarting, are possible at the beach in IJmuiden aan Zee. Please observe the local beach zoning. Five beach pavilions are open year-round; check their opening hours before your visit, as arrangements may change. Bus 382 runs directly from Amsterdam Sloterdijk station to the beach. As transport details may change, it is advisable to check the current service before travelling.
The 24-kilometre IJmuiden Rauw aan Zee cycling route runs along the beach, the harbours and the lock complex, which includes the world's largest sea lock. It crosses the Noordzeekanaal by ferry; check the ferry service before setting out. The Velserpad offers a different route length: over 30 kilometres, it connects various centres in Velsen and passes cultural-historical and scenic highlights.
History to Experience
The BunkerMuseum IJmuiden explores the history of the Second World War, the area's incorporation into the German Atlantic Wall and the role of bunkers in coastal defence, inside and around authentic bunkers. The museum includes six fully furnished bunkers. Tours with an experienced guide include visits to Kustbatterij Heerenduin and Flakbatterij Olmen. The guided programme may vary; book before your trip.
Some routes also bring history to life, though they differ in length and interpretation: the historic walking tour through Oud-IJmuiden is 5.5 kilometres long and uses 25 information panels featuring historical photographs. The 2.5-kilometre bunker route passes Second World War defensive structures; panels with QR codes provide background information.
The IJmuider Zee- en Havenmuseum covers the history of the Noordzeekanaal, the construction of the locks and breakwaters, and the subsequent development of IJmuiden and its maritime activities. Topics also include fishing, pilotage, and salvage and tugboat operations. Old ship engines are run there on the last Saturday afternoon of every month. Check the date in advance.
At the Ruïne van Brederode, a visit brings a specific chapter of history to life: during the Spanish siege of Haarlem, Brederode finally fell into ruin in 1573. A visit to the ruin can be combined with high tea in the monumental former steward's house; reservations are required.
Gardens and Nature Areas
Buitenplaats Beeckestijn, including its buildings and the entire park forest, is a Rijksmonument, a Dutch national monument. A cultural-historical walking route passes through formal ornamental gardens and shady parkland, bringing the estate's history to life. The gardens are open to the public free of charge at all times; temporary local closures may occur. Museumhuis Beeckestijn is an 18th-century country estate. Its geometrically designed French Baroque garden adjoins a more natural-looking English landscape park.
Zuid-Kennemerland National Park is a distinctive natural area between IJmuiden and Haarlem. Visitors can walk, cycle, go horseback riding and swim here. Most areas are free to access between sunrise and sunset, provided you stay on the paths. Follow local guidance.
Spaarnwoude Park, between Haarlem, Amsterdam and Velsen, offers another kind of landscape: walking and cycling routes wind through typical Dutch wet meadows. Rare breeds of farm animals are raised on the farm in the park. The Marathon IJmuiden cycling route offers a longer ride: it is 42.2 kilometres long and runs from the Spaarnwoude recreational area via Spaarndam and the dune landscape of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park to Velsen's beaches and harbours.
Nature and Harbour Themes in Museums
The Pieter Vermeulen Museum is the centre for nature and environmental education in the municipality of Velsen. Its permanent exhibition focuses on the natural environment of Kennemerland and the tensions between people, nature and the economy. It also features temporary exhibitions that invite visitors to participate and explore. Check the latest exhibition information before your trip.
