Velsen-Noord offers two distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: Noordpier Beach, with wind and water sports, and buildings from various eras. Depending on your interests, you can make a beach visit or architecture the focus of your trip.

Noordpier Beach: Wind, Waves, and Water Sports

Noordpier Beach is a wide beach directly north of the Noordzeekanaal and south of Wijk aan Zee. An activity zone offers options such as kitesurfing, surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Special wind conditions and wave currents make the beach a spot for wind and water sports. These three sports give you specific points of reference if you want to include this theme in your travel plans.

The beach has beach pavilions, the Sea You restaurant, and a surf center. Check which services are available for your travel dates before your trip. This lets you take the listed beach amenities into account alongside the sporting activities when planning.

Architecture and Building History in Velsen-Noord

On the border with Beverwijk stands Villa Beecksangh, a 19th-century Neoclassical villa with Empire-style features. Its construction period and stylistic features make it a specific example of the area’s architectural history. As a villa, it differs from the residential houses and administrative building, which represent other architectural themes in Velsen-Noord.

At Grote Hout- or Koningsweg are semi-detached houses for railway guards dating from the 19th century. Characteristic pointed arches made of yellow brick adorn the houses. This facade detail draws attention to a different building type from Villa Beecksangh: rather than a single villa, the focus here is on semi-detached houses with a distinctive brick motif.

There are also different residential architecture themes on Wijkerstraatweg. A row of workers’ houses was designed by the architect Bartels. The three houses at Wijkerstraatweg 84–88, by contrast, were designed by Romke de Vries for the Melkinrichting. Their slightly modernist design features large, continuous glass surfaces. This lets you see different designs and building purposes on the same street without conflating the two groups of houses.

Another striking feature is the war memorial “Gehavende Vrije Vogel”: a figurative steel bird sculpture mounted on a column. At the Administratiekantoor van de Hoogovens, by contrast, the focus is on post-war architecture. The building is among Dudok’s higher-quality post-war designs in Velsen-Noord. Velsen-Noord also offers visitors an architectural perspective on W. M. Dudok’s reconstruction architecture. You can consider the buildings and this architectural perspective as different ways of exploring the area’s history.

Connections and Planning

Various modes of transport are available for travel between the towns: Bus route 74 connects Beverwijk and Velsen-Noord with IJmuiden. The Watertaxi IJmuiden is a paid ferry service for people and bicycles between IJmuiden and Velsen-Noord. The options therefore differ in mode of transport, the places they connect, and whether you can take a bicycle. If you plan to take the ferry, check the timetable for your travel date.

When choosing what interests you, you can consider Noordpier Beach and architectural history as separate focuses or include both in your plans. For a stay focused on water sports, the activity zone and the listed sports are specific points of reference; for an interest in building history, the villa, residential houses, memorial, and Dudok’s post-war architecture offer different points of interest.
