Oostzaan: Experience a Landscape of Water and History
Accommodation in Oostzaan
Water and history shape the experiences in Oostzaan in different ways. The Het Twiske recreational area covers 650 hectares, one third of which is water. Oostzanerveld offers a different landscape: a peat meadow area with hundreds of floating fen islands. It is part of the “Ilperveld, Varkensland, Oostzanerveld en ’t Twiske” Natura 2000 site and has protected status. Water-based recreational activities and a protected meadow area therefore offer distinct focuses for a trip.
Water, Nature, and Activities
Het Twiske offers opportunities for swimming, diving, surfing, canoeing, and sailing. The area also has beaches, an adventure playground, a diving park, a harbor, a climbing park, a care farm, and a monumental windmill. If you have a particular facility in mind when planning, be sure to check its access requirements. Fishing is also possible, both at Stooterplas in Het Twiske and in Oostzanerveld; local fishing regulations may apply.
Oostzanerveld is best explored by boat. Boat excursions are available, as are canoes and rowing boats for hire. On a guided excursion, the skipper and a guide share stories about the area’s history. Along the way, the trip passes, among other things, reddish-brown cattle and goats grazing in the meadows. The excursion boat can be boarded with a rollator or wheelchair; confirm this information before booking. If you are planning an excursion or boat rental, check availability for your dates before you travel.
There is a boat ramp at Rietschoot with parking, from which you can explore the area by water. As parking arrangements can change, check the conditions for your visit. The Sloepennetwerk passes through Oostzaan and offers several routes for sloops; here too, it is worth checking the latest route details before setting out. The Westerstijfselmakerspad is accessible on foot only. Cycling and walking routes from Oostzaan follow the water, open polders, and nature areas, making it possible to explore nearby places and parts of Laag Holland.
Discover Culture and Local History
The “Recreatief & Historisch Oostzaan” route starts at the town hall and passes 13 cultural and historic sites and monuments in Oostzaan. A map of the route is available free of charge at the KunstGreep; check whether it is available there before your visit. On a route in Oostzaan, you can also use a QR code to listen to longer narrated stories. The different paths and stops offer various ways to explore local history, without requiring all the sights to be part of a single route.
The Grote Kerk is one of Oostzaan’s six national monuments (Rijksmonumenten). It can be visited for concerts, guided tours, or a moment of quiet reflection. Two ship models in the church recall Oostzaan’s history as an important seafaring community. Theater de KunstGreep presents professional performances from almost every theatrical genre. It has 261 permanent seats, including four wheelchair spaces. As the program varies, check the dates if you are planning a theater visit.
Individual monuments also tell stories of people and events: the Oostzaan Resistance Monument is a bronze chair on a concrete plinth, erected in memory of Pastor Nanne Zwiep. The Hannie Schaft plaque is a bronze relief depicting Dutch resistance fighter Jannetje Johanna Schaft. It is set into a freestanding brick wall. Those interested in public art can find Jan Timmer’s sculpture “Torso” in the green space by the Lishof care home on Lisweg.
Windmills, Buildings, and Industrial Traces
The industrial past can be seen in various places. The Kuiperijbrug over the Roemersloot at Kerkbuurt is a reminder of Oostzaan’s industrial history. Oostzaan experienced an industrial boom in the 16th and 17th centuries, when numerous bleaching grounds and starch works were spread throughout the area. Around 1630, starch was made from wheat in starch houses or sheds along clear, flowing waterways. The Westerstijfselmakerspad is accessible on foot only—important information when choosing a suitable route for your outing.
The windmills also have different histories: De Vlijt was built in Zaandam before 1900, moved to Oostzaan in 1945, and relocated in 1959/1960 to its current site on a small island near Doctor Keijzerstraat. De Windjager also stands on a small island and was built in 1978 as a hobby project. The Twiskemolen has stood on the boundary between the municipalities of Landsmeer and Oostzaan since 1974. The Polderhuis on Zuideinde has stood there since 1925.
Further historical connections add a sense of time to your visits. The painter and woodcutter Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen was born around 1470 and is introduced at the final stop on the “Buitengewoon Oostzaan” route. When planning your stay, you can choose your focus: water activities and landscapes, or monuments, art, and local history. These interests offer a practical starting point for looking for a hotel in Oostzaan for your trip.
