Visitors to Waspik for its local history can focus their stay on churches and the history of the town hall, or choose routes with a cultural and historical connection. When looking for a hotel in Waspik, the options differ in subject matter and format: alongside buildings and public art, there is a guided tour and several cycling and walking routes. An approximate duration is given for the historic walking tour; the World War II memorial cycling route lists a starting point and address.

Building and Local History

St. Bartholomeus Church in Waspik was built by E. de Kruyff between 1837 and 1841 in the Waterstaatskerk architectural style. The N.H. Church is a late Gothic cross church: its choir dates from the mid-15th century, while its three-aisled pseudo-basilical nave was built later in the same century. Both churches offer different architectural points of reference within the town’s history.

The history of local government and education can also be traced through named buildings. Following a 1874 municipal council decision to build a new one, the new Raadhuis Waspik came into use in 1875. It served as the town hall for more than sixty years. In 1938, the municipality of Waspik bought the de Roon family villa and, after renovations, made it the new town hall.

The Liefdegesticht Franciscus van Sales was converted from a large farmhouse into a convent in 1857. On 8 March 1858, eight sisters of the Congregation of Jesus, Mary and Joseph (J.M.J.) began their work there in Waspik. Classes for girls from Waspik also began at the Liefdegesticht. The local buildings therefore offer a way to explore different aspects of the town’s history: church architecture, municipal administration, and the history of education and convent life.

Art, Railways and Landscape

The Spoorhek in Waspik dates from 1886 and is about 144 metres long. It is the only surviving section of the fence, originally more than 2,000 metres long, along the “Halve Zolenlijn.” Comparing the surviving section with the original length illustrates the scale of the former structure.

“Ode aan de zandrug,” a three-dimensional map in Waspik, offers a different perspective on the landscape. It reconstructs the local sand ridge using old maps from 1895 and contour lines. Historical cartography and elevation data thus come together in a spatial representation of the terrain.

In the wider regional context, the protected Natura 2000 site Westelijke Langstraat lies between Waalwijk and Waspik. It is a valuable landscape with abundant nature and cultural history.

Walks and Routes

The local history society “Op ’t Goede Spoor” offers a guided historical walking tour through the centre of Waspik. It introduces important places and buildings in the town. The tour takes about 1½ to a maximum of two hours; the duration may vary depending on the group. It includes an interior visit to one of the two churches in the centre: the Bartholomeuskerk or the Nederlands Hervormde kerk. Confirm the current arrangements when booking. The Dorpswandeling Waspik ends at Den Bolder.

Cycling and walking routes also explore the history of the Langstraat. Four Attentiestenen in Waspik are linked by QR codes to the “Op pad in de historische Langstraat” cycling and walking route. As a cycling route, it connects Waspik with the historic centres of Capelle, Spang, Vrijhoeve, Besoijen, Waalwijk and Baardwijk. Individual signs may change.

The World War II monuments cycling route has a different focus: it passes through Waalwijk, Sprang-Capelle and Waspik and describes 22 monuments and memorials. The route can be cycled year-round. Its starting point in Waspik is Cultureel Centrum Den Bolder, Schoolstraat 19, 5165 TR Waspik; check that the route is available before setting off. While “Op pad in de historische Langstraat” connects historic town centres, this tour focuses specifically on World War II memorials.

The Spoorstraat in Waspik is listed as another starting point: Stage 10 of the Zuiderwaterlinie begins there. Route details may change, so check the latest information before setting off.
