Discover Waalwijk: Leather Heritage, Architecture and Nature
Accommodation in Waalwijk
Waalwijk brings together themes that can be explored in different ways: the history of leather and footwear production, striking architecture and the region’s natural areas. If you’re looking for a hotel in Waalwijk, you can first consider whether culture, cycling or the landscape will shape your stay. The exhibitions at the Schoenenkwartier, the Sint Jan de Doperkerk and the Huis van Waalwijk each offer a distinct focus; there are also cycling and walking options.
Leather and footwear history at the Schoenenkwartier
The permanent exhibition “How It's Made” explains how leather and shoes are made. Historic machines and contemporary interactive elements explore different aspects of production. “The Story Of The Langstraat” focuses on life in a region traditionally known for leather and footwear production. Five main characters shape this presentation. In this way, it presents two perspectives side by side: the production itself and life in the Langstraat.
The Schoenenkwartier combines a shoe museum, a knowledge centre and a laboratory. Visitors can learn, create and work innovatively there. The permanent exhibition draws on a collection of more than 13,000 shoes and 7,000 objects; these figures may be updated as the collection changes. Both exhibitions are designed as permanent exhibitions, but the specific programme may be updated. Check the latest information before your visit.
Architecture and a walk through the centre
The Sint Jan de Doperkerk stands out for its Neo-Byzantine architecture: it has 19 copper domes and a minaret-like bell tower. The Huis van Waalwijk offers a different architectural accent. Designed by architect Alexander Kropholler, the building is a Rijksmonument in the centre. It serves as a place for art, culture and social gatherings; visitors can see exhibitions, take part in workshops and attend events there.
The Rondje Waalwijk-Centrum walking route was designed around the Huis van Waalwijk, the Schoenenkwartier and the Sint Jan de Doperkerk. It brings these three cultural and architectural sites together. This is a different way to explore Waalwijk’s themes than focusing on a single exhibition or building. No walking time is provided, so choose the route based on your interest in the places mentioned rather than an assumed duration.
Cycling routes with different focuses
The Waalwijk Leather Route is a 30-kilometre cycling route about Waalwijk’s leather and footwear industry. It is signposted between numbered junctions. Along the way, audio clips explain what cyclists are seeing and convey the history, entrepreneurial spirit and innovative strength of the Langstraat. The route thus combines industrial history with insights explained along the way.
Separate from this are four cycling routes that start at the Sint Jan de Doperkerk and head north, east, south and west through the surrounding region. Flyers are available for these routes. The Leather Route has a clearly defined industrial theme and a stated distance; the four other routes are distinguished by their directions. This means you can choose by theme or by preferred compass direction, without assuming an unstated distance for the second group.
Natural areas and getting your bearings in the region
The Westelijke Langstraat nature area lies between Waalwijk and Waspik. It is at the transition from sand to clay, known as the “Naad van Brabant”. Another landscape option is Het Hoefsven, also known locally as ’t Lido: a nature and recreation area on the edge of Waalwijk and close to the Loonse en Drunense Duinen. If you’re planning to make use of the recreational facilities there, check what is available before your trip.
A municipal information notice from May 2025 mentions a rest stop on the Winterdijk in the Westelijke Langstraat, with a small car park and an information board about the area’s nature and history. As parking and information facilities may change, it’s a good idea to check shortly before your journey that they are still there.
A municipal information notice from May 2025 also places the Vossenstreken children’s route in the Westelijke Langstraat. Along the way, an app offers games and educational content about nature and traditional crafts. Check whether the app is currently available before your trip. This offer can be understood on its own terms: it combines nature topics with traditional crafts and is aimed at children.
