Steenbergen offers several distinct points of interest for your stay: fortification history, the Gummaruskerk, a coffee and tea museum, a harbor, and nature in the surrounding area. You can tailor your stay to the themes that interest you most.

Fortification History and Buildings

The surviving fortifications of Steenbergen were part of both the Zuiderwaterlinie and the West-Brabantse Waterlinie. The restored bastions are considered places where you can discover the town’s history. The moat is clearly visible, and the rampart has been restored. Two things are therefore important to understanding the site: its connection to the waterlines and the different states of preservation of the bastions, moat, and rampart.

The Gummaruskerk was built between 1900 and 1902 to designs by P.J.H. Cuypers. Its history adds an architectural highlight distinct from the bastions and moat.

De Klokgevel Coffee and Tea Museum

The Koffie- & Theemuseum De Klokgevel displays a private collection of more than 3,000 tea packets and 4,000 coffee packets. It also includes dozens of coffee grinders, tableware sets, coffee roasters, and chamber pots. The collection therefore goes beyond packaging to include equipment and everyday objects as well. In this way, it connects coffee and tea with a broader view of everyday culture.

The museum is housed in a municipal Rijksmonument dating from 1737, with authentic details such as an alcove bed. An alcove bed is a sleeping space built into a niche. The collection and the historic context of the building are therefore two distinct aspects of this museum site.

Nature Around Steenbergen

The natural area around Steenbergen is characterized by mudflats, streams, channels, and rugged vegetation, and is recommended for walking and cycling. This makes it a different kind of travel experience from churches, fortifications, and the museum: the focus here is on the landscape and outdoor activities. The features described bring together waterways, landforms, and vegetation to create a distinctive nature theme.

Harbor and Fort Henricus

The Steenbergse Haven, also known as the Kaai, is Steenbergen’s town harbor and marina, located on the Steenbergse Vliet. After the A4 was built, the harbor remained accessible to large sailing ships thanks to the Steenbergen aqueduct. The harbor is therefore notable not only for its role as a town harbor and marina, but also for the connection between the waterway and infrastructure.

Fort Henricus can be reached via the Westhavendijk. Natuurmonumenten owns and manages the fort. If you would like to visit Fort Henricus, check the local access conditions in advance.

Guided Town Tour

The guided Stadswandeling Steenbergen follows the fortified town’s past and present and lasts two hours. As an individual visitor, you can join a guide at scheduled times; the dates are listed in the agenda. Check the current agenda when planning your tour. This makes it easy to fit a guided visit with a clearly defined time commitment into your stay.
