If you are looking for a hotel in Dinteloord, you can plan your stay around three specific interests: local history, industrial heritage, and nature and trails. The historic centre combines a village layout modelled on Flakkee with buildings from different periods. The Dintelse Gorzen and several named routes are further points of interest for nature watching and route planning.

Townscape and architectural history

The historic centre has a village layout modelled on Flakkee: two front streets and two back streets on either side of De Kreek. Together, the street layout and De Kreek form the pattern of the historic town centre.

The Hervormde Church in Dinteloord is a square brick building designed by Johan van Swieten in 1693. It was built between 1693 and 1695. Above the entrance is a natural-stone cartouche bearing the inscription “1693” and the coat of arms of stadtholder Willem III; it was created by the sculptor Jan Blommendaal. The year therefore appears both in the building’s history and in the detail above the entrance.

The town hall is a Neoclassical building from the early 19th century. Its features include a wooden cornice, a gable and a small cupola. The church and town hall can be distinguished by period and architecture: the church was built between 1693 and 1695, while the town hall dates from the early 19th century. You can also explore the town’s history through the contrast between a square brick building and Neoclassical architecture.

Industrial history of the sugar factory

The cooperative sugar factory “De Dinteloord” was founded in 1908. The first cooperative sugar factory in West Brabant was also established in Dinteloord. The sugar factory houses a collection of historic steam engines from the sugar industry; its assembly and restoration began in 2004. A monumental office building near the sugar factory is designated as a Rijksmonument. Together, these features represent different aspects of the industrial heritage: the history of the factory’s founding, historic machinery and a monumental office building.

Nature, walking trails and cycling route

The Dintelse Gorzen is a former tidal area outside the dikes, managed by Natuurmonumenten, on the Krammer-Volkerak. There is a birdwatching hide, and the area attracts hundreds of bird species, including spoonbills, hen harriers and skylarks.

The red short route through the Dintelse Gorzen can be used with an all-terrain wheelchair from April to September, provided the trail is dry enough. This option depends on both the seasonal period and trail conditions. The Zuiderwaterlinie walking trail is marked with numbered junction signs; a Zuiderwaterlinie sign is also located beneath each junction sign.

The 25.1-kilometre “Canadese Bevrijders” walking stage passes through Dinteloord and goes by the Monument 1940–1945, which is located in the town. In Dinteloord, 4 November is observed as the day of the bombing of the village. The attack is cited as an example of collateral damage during Allied operations in Noord-Brabant.

The Prinslandroute is 46.5 kilometres long and has Dinteloord town centre as its designated starting point. By comparison, the walking stage is shorter; the cycling route’s starting point in the centre is explicitly specified. Before setting off by bike, it is worth checking the current route of the Prinslandroute.
