Elsendorp combines hiking trails through varied landscapes with buildings and memorial sites that each have their own historical connections. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on nature and hiking or on local history. Trailheads, landscape features, construction dates and a recurring pilgrimage date offer concrete points of reference to help you decide.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes Around Elsendorp

The routes in the “Wandelen in Elsendorp door alle windstreken” set start at Christoffelplein, by the church in the heart of the village. The route passes through forest, old heathland, sandy paths and farmland. The Paarse wandelroute also crosses the landscape, but takes in open areas, heathland and forests. Both routes feature heathland and forest; the route set also mentions sandy paths and farmland, while the Paarse wandelroute specifically includes open areas. This allows you to distinguish between the trails based on their described landscape features.

The nature areas each have their own characteristics, too. Landgoed De Krim consists mostly of wet heathland, three fens and a pingo—a relic from the last Ice Age, the Weichselian glaciation. Part of Landgoed Cleefswit is a nature reserve; the shape of a former fen is still recognizable, as are the remains of an old crescent-shaped dune formed by drifting sand. Landgoed De Sijp has a different mix of landscapes: forest, heathland and farmland, with avenues lined by beech and American oak trees. The range therefore extends from wet heathland and an Ice Age relic to the former shapes of fens and dunes, and avenues in a varied landscape.

Buildings, Monuments and Local History

Among the named historic buildings is De Zijp at Ripseweg 51. This Dutch Rijksmonument was built in 1906 in a traditional, craft-based style. Annehoeve, at Elsendorpseweg 72, dates from 1910 and has been designated a Rijksmonument since October 9, 2001. The two farms are thus linked by their monument status, but differ in their construction date and style description: De Zijp is described as having a traditional, craft-based style, while the construction date is given for Annehoeve.

Church buildings in Elsendorp also have different historical connections. Sint Christoffelkerk, at Sint Christoffelplein 3, is designated a municipal monument; the corresponding decision was adopted on January 7, 2025. The church had already been put into use as Elsendorp’s parish church in 1960. De Vossenberg is a distinctive church building dating from 1927. Thus, the use of Sint Christoffelkerk as a parish church and its later designation as a monument sit alongside De Vossenberg’s construction date and characterization.

The H. Christoffel pilgrimage takes place on the first two weekends of July and has continued since 1936. It provides a specific date for travelers interested in religious tradition. The war memorial in Elsendorp commemorates all fellow citizens who fell victim to reprisals by the occupying forces during the Second World War. Alongside architectural history, local themes therefore include tradition and remembrance.

Which Focus Suits Your Trip?

If you mainly want to go hiking, the starting point at Christoffelplein and the different landscapes provide guidance when choosing between the trails described. For a stronger focus on history, the construction dates, monument designations and war memorial offer different points of interest. If you are staying in July and the pilgrimage is important to your plans, check the date for the relevant year.
