Bakel between nature and history
Accommodation in Bakel
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Bakel, different interests can shape your travel plans: nature areas, architectural history, museums, local traditions or a particular activity. Exploring these topics can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Nature areas and trails around Bakel
North of Bakel lies Stippelberg, an extensive nature area. The landscape takes its name from the former drifting-sand dunes that shaped it. Many birds can be spotted there. You may also encounter badgers, foxes or wild boar; which animals you might see can vary by season.
West of Bakel lie the Bakelsche Beemden, crossed by the Bakelse Aa. You can walk there beneath poplars and conifers; there is a fish ladder in the stream. Bospark Bakel has surfaced, accessible walking paths, as well as a butterfly garden, a gnome forest, a play and picnic area, and a miniature railway. Other features mentioned include monumental trees, a restored tuberculosis hut and an animal park.
The routes also differ in their focus. The Breuken Belevenroute takes you by bicycle through the area around Bakel, whose landscape is shaped by the Peelrandbreuk fault. The In de ban van de Esperloop en Snelle loop route follows the banks of these two waterways. Lopen langs lopen is a walking route along waterways and through nature and old hamlets. Along the Vogelkijkpad De Mirre, IVN Gemert-Bakel has put up several nest boxes; information signs explain which birds can be spotted there. Each route therefore highlights different landscape features or opportunities for observation.
Church, mill and traces of early settlement
The Sint Willibrorduskerk was built in the early 16th century in the Gothic style. Inside is a rare barrel vault decorated with French lilies and coloured bands. Historically, the church was the mother church for the surrounding region. Its architecture, vault and former role offer different ways to explore the history of Bakel and its surroundings.
Another structure is the Molen Sint Willibrordus, dating from 1586. It is a so-called standaardmolen, supported by a wooden post. This construction is part of its description and sets it apart thematically from the Gothic church architecture.
At the Achter de Molen archaeological site, house foundations, water wells and various objects dating from the 8th to the 11th century have been found. The finds are considered the earliest settlement traces of medieval Bakel discovered to date. The site thus adds evidence of early settlement to the architectural history.
Museums, crafts and flavours
Boerderijmuseum De Tolbrug specialises in agriculture, tradition and everyday life around 1900. At Museum ’t Zusterke, you can see a collection of objects and care items from 20th-century home care, as well as a few objects from the former St. Jozefsheil sanatorium. The two museums have different thematic focuses: rural everyday life in one, and home care and selected historical connections in the other.
At Schilderatelier Maria de Vries, individuals can book painting lessons and small groups can book workshops by arrangement. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, check availability before your trip. At the “Proef Bakel” beer tasting, four speciality beers from Brouwerij Holevoort are served on tap, 15 cl each; their flavours and origins are explained. The specific tasting arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check the details in advance.
Carnival as a local occasion
Carnavalsvereniging De Pierewaaiers has organised carnival in Bakel since 1963. Annual highlights include the Prinsenbal in early January, when the new prince is announced, and the Prinsenreceptie a week later. These are followed by the Bonte Avonden in the run-up to carnival and the grand parade on Monday afternoon. Exact event dates vary. If carnival is the reason for your trip, check the dates for your preferred travel period in advance.
Depending on your interests, Bakel can offer opportunities for wildlife watching, walks, exploring architectural and settlement history, museum visits or attending a local event.
