Soerendonk brings together a cultural landscape, local history and opportunities for cycling. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Soerendonk, you can first consider what matters most to you: nature watching, historic places or outdoor activities.

Landscape and Nature

The heart of the Barony of Cranendonck resembles an old Brabant cultural landscape, with meadows, fields, woodland, streams, hedgerows and tree-lined banks. Part of the barony is designated as the “Wet Pearl of Nature”: a nature reserve that depends on a high groundwater level or seepage water.

Cranendonckse bos is a varied landscape of wet woodland that gives way to the valley of the Buulder Aa. At Soerendonks Goor, the “Hou it Moi” birdwatching hut by a body of water offers opportunities to observe herons, water pipits, ducks and other bird species. Sightings vary by season. The hut has picnic benches and can serve as a rest stop on walks through Soerendonks Goor or Gastelse Heide. As visitor facilities may change, check the condition of the hut and benches before your walk if needed.

Another special feature in Soerendonk is the Het Zuyderblad tea plantation, the first tea plantation in the Netherlands. Several thousand tea plants grow there, spread across three tea gardens. Such cultivation details may change over time.

History in the Village

Kasteel Cranendonck was built around 1250 between Maarheeze and Soerendonk. In 1673, the French largely destroyed the estate. The two dates mark different stages in the castle’s history.

The Sint Jan Onthoofding Church at Dorpsstraat 25 is a municipal monument. The church building was constructed between 1836 and 1838 and extended in 1932. The church also houses the oldest surviving instrument made by the Vermeulen family of organ builders. The building’s history, its protected status and the instrument are thus connected in one specific place in Soerendonk.
