Budel-Dorplein brings together an industrial past, a protected historic village, theatre, and trails through the surrounding forests and marshland. You can organise these themes to help plan your trip: historic buildings point to different chapters in the village’s history, while walking and cycling routes offer specific ways to spend time outdoors.

Industrial History and Village Character

Emile and Luciene Dor built a zinc factory in Budel-Dorplein in 1892. The former prison building was built in 1898 and is designated a national monument in the Netherlands. In 2011, Budel-Dorplein was granted protected village status. These dates mark different milestones: 1892 for the zinc factory, 1898 for the prison building, and 2011 for the protection of the village character. Industrial history, individual buildings, and a distinction for the village thus sit side by side.

The Cantine Theater Dorplein is also a national monument and is located in the former Hotel St. Jozef. “'t Prisonneke” is another of Budel-Dorplein’s attractions. The monument designations therefore apply to individual buildings, while protected village status applies to the village as a whole.

Theatre and Guided Tours

The Cantinetheater stages a performance every month. The programme ranges from cabaret to music, featuring both local and international artists. The programme may change, so check the theatre’s current calendar if you have a particular evening in mind. This makes it easy to fit a cultural event into the rest of your trip.

Private guided tours of Dorplein can be arranged for family days, outings with colleagues, or student groups. Arrange a date with the local coordinators before you arrive. The local guides are called “cicerone”. The schedule also includes an open, approximately two-hour guided walk through Dorplein with a “cicerone” on the last Sunday of each month, starting at De Schakel at 2 pm. Confirm this date before you arrive. The arrangements differ: for groups, agree on a date with the coordinators; for the open walk, use the stated monthly schedule as your guide.

Walking and Cycling

The 10 km “Le Projet de Dorplein” walking route starts at De Schakel, Sint Barbaraweg 1, in Budel-Dorplein. The route distance and the duration given for the open guided walk answer different planning questions: 10 km describes the route, while approximately two hours is the timeframe for the guided walk. You can consider distance and time separately without treating the two outings as the same offer.

The route between cycling junctions 2 and 78 passes Jorine's Theetuin. You can combine a visit with a cycling trip or a walk through the forests and marshland around Budel-Dorplein. Jorine's Theetuin serves tea, coffee, soft drinks, and homemade cake; its offerings may vary by season. Bear this seasonal aspect in mind if you plan to stop there.
