Walem: Culture, Hiking and Cycling
Accommodation in Walem
Walem can be explored through its townscape, religious heritage and specific routes. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Walem, its architectural heritage, the Sjaasbergergank, or a hiking or cycling tour can help you decide which aspects to focus on.
Townscape and Sacred Heritage
Walem 106 is a whitewashed marl farmhouse with an entrance beneath a canopy. There is also a small chapel at a crossroads, known as the Mariakapel Walem. Together, the farmhouse and chapel offer a glimpse of the different architectural forms found in the town.
The Mariakapel has a blue, flat barrel-vaulted ceiling decorated with stars. In a niche above an altar stands a statue of a mother and child on a crescent moon. These architectural and figurative details provide a particular point of interest for travelers interested in religious architecture.
Another architectural landmark is Kalkovens Walem, a lime kiln dating from the 20th century. The farmhouse, chapel and lime kiln each provide a different point of interest, allowing you to experience Walem through more than just one building.
De Kluis and the Sjaasbergergank
De Kluis is a hermitage with a chapel on the Schaelsberg between Valkenburg and Walem. Fourteen Stations of the Cross are arranged in a circle beside De Kluis. The annual Sjaasbergergank has led there on the last Sunday in June since 1758. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with the pilgrimage, check the event details in advance.
De Kluis regularly opens to visitors, and its opening hours are seasonal; check the current hours before your trip. This will help you plan your visit without assuming that seasonal opening means access is available at all times.
Hiking and Cycling
The “Landelijk Schin op Geul” hiking route passes through the hilly landscape of Valkenburg aan de Geul toward Walem, passing Schaelsberg and De Kluis. The Schaelsberg hiking route is marked with white arrows on small yellow square signs. As route conditions and markings may change, check the latest information before setting out.
Route 4 Schin op Geul-Walem-Oud-Valkenburg is a varied hike of about 7 kilometers. One possible shortcut via Molenweg ends at De Kluis. This lets you combine the hike with a route whose described shortcut ends at this religious site.
The 23-kilometer Geuldalroute cycling route passes through Valkenburg, Walem, Schin op Geul, Oud-Valkenburg, Broekhem and Houthem St. Gerlach, before returning to Valkenburg. Along the route, cyclists turn right in Walem onto Kleineweg; De Kluis lies at the edge of the forest. For reference, Route 4 is a hike of about 7 kilometers, while the Geuldalroute is a 23-kilometer cycling route. These figures refer to different activities.
Landscape and Local Produce
Walem offers beautiful views and is a place where road cyclists can prepare for a challenging climb. Farms in Walem offer fresh milk and other food to take away; the selection may vary from farm to farm. Alongside architecture and routes, the landscape and agricultural produce offer different interests to consider when planning your trip.
