Art and history in Berg en Terblijt
At Giardino, works by sculptors and painters are presented both in the gallery and in the sculpture garden. Visitors receive a personal welcome and expert advice on selecting and displaying art. This means that viewing the works and having a personal conversation about art can be among the highlights of a visit.
The Geulhemmergroeve has an underground network of tunnels about 25 kilometres long. The cave dwellings at the quarry also tell the story of how marl was used: they were created by quarrying the rock. A wall with a window and door was built in front of the excavated cave space. This makes it possible to see the distinctive construction of the dwellings in the contrast between the excavated space and its brick façade.
The historical heritage of the Geulhemmergroeve also includes a chapel dating from the French Revolution and an Oranje Gallery with medallions of the House of Orange. You can find other architectural styles at the H.H. Monulphus en Gondulphus church, which was built in the classic Neo-Gothic style. Its pointed arches are a distinctive feature of this design. The front façade of the Baarhäuschen on Monulphusplein is clearly visible from the street.
Kasteel Geulzicht also has its own architectural connection to the region. The castle stands on Geulhemmerberg in the hamlet of Geulhem, near Berg. The hamlet is now part of the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul; the castle is a Rijksmonument and part of Buitengoed Geul & Maas. It was built in 1918 in the English Neo-Gothic style. The design was by Henri Reek of Maastricht, who worked on behalf of P.G. Zuyderhoudt.
