Schin Op Geul combines hiking opportunities with limestone landscapes, orchids and historic buildings. If you are looking for a hotel, you can use your interests as a starting point for planning: Would you like to choose a specific route length, experience distinctive landscapes or learn more about the castle and church? The natural and cultural destinations offer different highlights, from limestone cliffs and meadows to historic architecture.

Limestone landscapes and orchids

In the Genhoes nature area, you will find flowering, herb-rich meadows and limestone cliffs millions of years old. At Daolkesberg near Schin Op Geul, a striking limestone wall forms part of a former marl quarry. Thus, the meadows and cliffs in the nature area offer a different impression of the limestone landscape from the specific site of former quarrying.

South of Schin Op Geul lies the long, dry valley of Gerendal. Several species of rare, wild orchids bloom in its limestone grasslands. The Gerendal Orchid Garden is located at Valkenburgerweg 1 in Schin Op Geul. The garden blooms in spring, and visitors can view the orchids up close.

Buildings and historic sites

Kasteel Genhoes is a Rijksmonument, a nationally listed monument. Its features include a corner tower, moats with an arched bridge and a long driveway. The castle was built of Limburg marl and brick. In the Genhoes area, visitors can hike from Kasteel Genhoes to the De Kluis hermitage. The Kluis contains a small museum with items belonging to Johannus Henricus Weerts, who lived there from 1860 to 1889.

The Sint-Mauritiuskerk also offers a distinctive cultural and historical highlight: it is considered one of the oldest churches in Limburg. Its original Romanesque nave may date back to the 11th century. The church stands partly on a church mound with a marl retaining wall and is surrounded by a cemetery.

Hiking and cycling

On the Kasteelwandeling Schin op Geul, you can choose between hiking routes of 4, 6 or 8 kilometres. The routes pass through the area around Schin op Geul and the Geul Valley. The distance therefore offers a specific criterion for planning if you want to weigh up different lengths.

The Krijtwandeling lus 3 can be identified by its route: it follows the Geul for part of the way and then passes through Schaelsberg and Sint-Jansbosch. The route runs through the limestone-rich, green surroundings of Schin op Geul in the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul. While the route length is the main consideration for the Kasteelwandeling, here the Geul and the named landscape areas provide orientation.

The Door het Gerendal route passes through the Gerendal, with its Orchid Garden, hillside woodlands, standard fruit orchards and pastures where Mergelland sheep graze. This path is therefore characterised by a series of specific landscape features. The Gerendal also offers a seasonal excursion with a forester: it includes a walk of about two and a half hours, during which visitors can discover flowering plants and active wildlife. Check the current dates in advance.

For cyclists, the Keutenberg is a notable landmark: among cyclists, it is known for its 23 percent gradient. You can therefore plan your stay around different interests, such as the distances of hiking routes, the distinctive landscapes along the trails or a specific cycling destination.
