Discover Gennep: Nature, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Gennep
In Heijense Bos, you can hike, cycle and enjoy the tranquillity of nature. This valuable natural area belongs to the municipality of Gennep. Pedestrians and cyclists can freely use the paths and trails between sunrise and sunset; there are special riding routes for horse riders. This gives different activities their own space, without all routes being intended for the same use.
Nature and Trails in Gennep
The route networks also provide a practical guide: Gennep has at least 130 kilometres of hiking trails, 60 kilometres of riding trails, 42 kilometres of mountain bike trails, a 60-kilometre cycle network, a 7-kilometre canoe route and a 27-kilometre playground route. The Niers Valley features a varied landscape of grassland, damp tall-herb vegetation, and willow and poplar carr woodland. Tributaries and ponds provide habitats for amphibians. Birdlife includes herons, storks, kingfishers, swans, geese, ducks, woodpeckers, cormorants and buzzards. Various orchid species and marsh gentians can also be found around De Diepen and Sint Jansberg.
Fortress History and Visitor Information
The Genneper Huys is now a ruin near the town of Gennep, at the point where the Niers flows into the Meuse. The fortress played an important role in the Eighty Years’ War: in 1641, Frederik Hendrik van Oranje’s army besieged the Genneper Huys. Hiking and cycling routes, information points and an exhibition make its history accessible to visitors.
The Liberation Route Gennep offers a different historical perspective. It starts at the Oude Martinustoren and passes information boards and listening stones that tell visitors about events during the liberation of Gennep. The Martinustoren visitor centre is also the starting point for various cycling and hiking routes. There, you can learn more about the cultural history and nature of Gennep and the Maas en Niers region. Built in 1869, the Neo-Gothic gate tower is a Rijksmonument and is attributed to Pierre Cuypers.
Museums and Architectural History
At Museum Het Petershuis in Gennep, the permanent collection combines archaeological finds with scale models and historical information about Gennep and the region. The museum holds eight temporary exhibitions each year, dedicated to contemporary artists or a current topic. Its permanent collection and changing perspectives sit side by side.
Museum De Oude Pottenbakkerij preserves the Netherlands’ last flowerpot factory to remain in its old, original condition, including its wood-fired kiln. The museum also has the world’s only working ceramic organ. Private guided tours are available for groups by arrangement; confirm the arrangements before you arrive.
The churches and historic buildings also tell stories of different eras. The Sint Martinus Kerk in Gennep is a Rijksmonument; its crypt houses a small religious museum. The Hervormde kerk in Gennep is the oldest small church on Dutch territory built with its own funds. In Ottersum, the Parochiekerk on Raadhuisplein was brought into use in 1931; its interior is designed in the Art Deco style. Its tower has four large bells, and the large sound openings offer views of the village and surrounding area. Access to the tower may depend on local arrangements; check in advance.
During Tourist Info Gennep’s opening hours, the Oude Stadhuis offers a free guided tour of the Lower Rhine Renaissance, provided no weddings or other activities are taking place there. Ask in advance whether a tour is possible at your preferred time. Another stop on the architectural history trail is Kapel St. Antonius Abt: it stands in the smallest settlement in the municipality of Gennep and is the municipality’s oldest chapel. Kasteel Huys Heijen became a true moated castle after a tributary of the Meuse flowed around the house. The lord of the castle and visual artist Peter Roovers created sculptures there.
